Coronavirus Impact: ALROSA Relocates Diamond Auctions; HKTDC Postpones Twin Hong Kong Shows

Following the decision of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) to reschedule the twin shows that were to be held in Hong Kong in early March, ALROSA has announced that it will relocate its March auctions for rough and polished diamonds to other trading centers.

HKTDC said yesterday that given the measures taken by the government against the spread of the coronavirus, the events have now been rescheduled to May. “The safety of exhibitors and buyers has always been a priority for the HKTDC,” the organisation stated, adding that the two fairs will now take place as a single event from May 18-21, 2020 at the AsiaWorld- Expo.

HKTDC explained that the decision was “In line with the measures taken by the Hong Kong SAR government against the spread of the novel coronavirus”.

Subsequently, ALROSA stated that the auction for special size rough diamonds will now take place in Moscow from March 2 to 18, 2020, while Ramat Gan (Israel) will host a polished diamond auction, the dates for which will be announced later.

“ALROSA is a regular participant of a major jewellery fair in Hong Kong. Every year, we hold auctions and tenders for rough and polished diamonds there. This year, the organizers decided to postpone the spring fair until the second half of May. Our company has adjusted its business plans respectively, and relocated two auctions scheduled for March fair,” commented Evgeny Agureev, Deputy CEO of ALROSA.

HKTDC reassured all participants that it would “monitor the situation closely and provide details of the rescheduling arrangements to exhibitors and buyers.” The trade show organisers said that participants can seek further details, if needed, by calling the HKTDC customer service hotline on +852-1830 668.
