Gem Diamonds Recovers 114 Ct Yellow Diamond at Letšeng; 11th 100+ Ct Diamond in 2019

Gem Diamonds announced yesterday that it has recovered a 114 carat Type 1 yellow diamond at the Letšeng mine in Lesotho, taking the number of diamonds of over 100 carats recovered during the current year to 11.

According to a presentation made by the Company earlier this year, 2019 is now on par with 2015 for the second highest number of 100+ carat diamond recoveries in a year. The current year is now only behind 2018, when 15 such very large diamonds were recovered.

The mine is renowned for its production of large, top-colour, exceptional white diamonds and is described by the company as “the highest average dollar per carat kimberlite diamond mine in the world”.

This year, Gem Diamonds also recovered some remarkable coloured diamonds. The 114 ct stone is the fourth yellow in the 100+ category to be found this year. In addition, 2019 has also yielded a 13.32 carat pink diamond which sold for a Letšeng record price of US$ 656,934 per carat.
