The late Shri SS Backliwal

GJEPC Mourns the Loss of Visionary Leader Shri SS Backliwal

On the passing of the late Shri SS Backliwal, GJEPC and the gem and jewellery industry fondly remembers his groundbreaking contributions and enduring legacy. Shri Backliwal's visionary leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on the industry, shaping its trajectory for generations to come.

Recognising the need for qualified gemmologists and a platform for gem testing and authentication, Shri SS Backliwal founded the Indian Gemological Institute in New Delhi in 1978, to provide comprehensive education and training in gem testing and gemmology. The institute has since produced renowned jewellers and gemmologists over the decades.

Shri Backliwal's tireless advocacy for the establishment of the Jewellery Product Development Centre (JPDC) in New Delhi illustrates his commitment to serving the needs of North India's jewellery production centres. Despite initial recommendations to establish the JPDC in Bombay, Shri Backliwal's persuasive arguments led to the establishment of the centre in Delhi. Today, the JPDC continues to provide invaluable training services in jewellery manufacturing, thanks to his foresight and determination.

As a co-founder of the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Shri Backliwal played a pivotal role in shaping the industry's direction. Moreover, Shri Backliwal also held several key positions in the northern region trade bodies. His dedication to the Delhi Jewellers Association spanned several decades, during which he served as its President and later, as its Life Patron. His unparalleled knowledge, sense of fairness, and generosity endeared him to members, who held him in great esteem.

In 1963, he established the All India Jewellers Association, providing a national platform for jewellers to address their concerns and represent their interests to the central government.  Shri SS Backliwal's contributions have not only shaped the industry, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
