GJEPC’s Surat Regional Office Holds Seminar on Technical Aspects of Producing Lab Grown Diamonds

The Regional Office Surat (RoS) of The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) held a seminar to inform members on the technical aspects of producing lab grown diamonds (LGD) on November 29, 2019.

The seminar was held in response to feedback from the industry, and a need felt for information on the topic.  Members had raised the fact that they were facing challenges in setting up plants to grow lab grown diamonds; and to run them profitably. Further, they felt there were different opinions on technology to be used, output etc. As a result of the lack of knowledge and information about the subject, members of the industry were finding it difficult to take an informed decision on whether to enter into this business or not. With a view to filling this information gap and keeping in mind the requirements of the industry, GJEPC organised a seminar to educate members on various aspects of  growing diamonds in a laboratory.

RoS GJEPC invited Dr. Karnal Patel, an expert in diamond growing, to speak at the seminar. He  provided guidance on Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition (MPCVD) technology, evolution of the system, Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) diamond growing process flow, importance of Quality Control  and lab equipment, High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Low Pressure High Temperature (LPHT) annealing, engineering application, basic references on investment, supply chain, value generation, SWOT analysis and tips for the success and sustainability of the business, raw material requirements, skill, productivity and output etc.

The session, which was attended by more than 40 members, was followed by a lively Q&A. Members have requested GJEPC to organise more such workshops in order to get more information on the technical and operational aspects of growing LGDs.
