Botswana Invites Applications for New Prospecting Licences in Orapa Kimberlite Field

The Botswana government has invited interested companies or individuals to apply for precious stones prospecting licences in the Orapa Kimberlite Field, according to reports in the media. It has been reported that the official announcement regarding the application was issued by the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources through the Department of Mines on Monday.

The Orapa Kimberlite Field houses some of the most well known diamond mines in Botswana such as Debswana, Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa. Many other companies such as Botswana Diamonds (including in some areas where it is in partnership with Alrosa), Pangolin, Firestone and others are also engaged in exploration and prospecting within the kimberlite field.

The ministry announcement said that the licences will be issued for six blocks covering some known kimberlites in the Orapa-Letlhakane area in eastern Botswana. Separate applications have to be made for each block and submitted at the office of the Department of Mines (Prospecting Licence Unit) in Gaborone. The last date for receiving applications is July 17, 2015.

The announcement stated that interested parties must provide information indicating that they are qualified to undertake prospecting operations in accordance with Part IV of the Mines and Minerals Act.
