Rooted in Spirituality

Ananya Fine Jewellery is carving a niche for itself in the world of jewellery. While the designs are contemporary, the inspiration is rooted in in Indian traditions and culture.

At Ananya Fine Jewellery, the philosophy of Indian spirituality lies at the heart of every design. The brand’s founder Ananya Malhotra channels the flow of energy through the human body’s chakra or energy points by using different gemstones and highlighting their healing properties.

Her latest line, The Scatter Collection, is inspired by the concept of metaphysical energy and movements. The designs represent the movement of energy between the root and the crown chakras and use diamonds, emeralds, rubies and blue sapphires.

Malhotra has fashioned the jewellery into versatile creations. Many of the earrings can be worn as studs or hoops or then with ear jackets to transform them into a dressy piece. The collection will be launched with Threads Styling, a London-based personalised shopping advisory in March.

Design with a difference

Originally from India, and now settled in Miami, Ananya effortlessly straddles the world of designing everyday essentials, partywear statements as well as heavier sets for brides. A young designer in her late twenties, Malhotra’s creations represent all that the new-age woman stands. The well edited pieces are striking and pack a punch.

Ananya translates into ‘unique’ in Hindi, and this is reflected in the brand’s overarching mission: to create jewellery that has no equivalent: in beauty, craftsmanship and meaning.

“I grew up in India where jewellery holds great significance. I went on to discover my true passion for designing jewellery while studying at Central Saint Martins in London and then at Gemological Institute of America (GIA). I was keen to share the cultural and sentimental value jewellery has for me through my own brand,” shares Malhotra. She has designed brooches for the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as a functional ring for the Barbican museum. She has also collaborated with reputed brands like Swarovski and Amrapali in the past.

Malhotra’s stackable Chakra bracelets and the Nazar Talisman collection of rings also draw on warding of negative energies through colour and gemstones. Malhotra beautifully uses mother-of-pearl alongside diamonds and gemstones in her Mogra collection. Though it has botanical references, most of her pieces have a geometric slant.

Retailing globally

The brand is just four years old, but it has made a mark for itself in India, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the USA. Malhotra has her own e-store and retails on Far Fetch. Her jewels are sold alongside stalwarts like Pomellato, Boucheron, Cartier and others on the e-commerce platform.

Malhotra’s family has a strong retail background – her parents own the two-decade-old multi designer store Evoluzione, which has outlets in Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi. In fact, Malhotra also retails her collections at a dedicated space in Evoluzione’s Chennai store.

On asked if her background has helped her to polish her retail game, she shares, “My parents helped me to understand design, creativity and business, and have always been my greatest critics and supporters from a young age.” The down time during 2020 helped Malhotra to hone her design process as well as research the properties of varied gemstones, which she will bring into her fold in her subsequent collections this year.
