Gemfields recently introduced \u201cChipembele\u201d, the latest and largest significant gemstone discovered at the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia. Naming of uncut emeralds is a tradition reserved only for the most rare and remarkable gems. While no official record exists, it is thought that not more than a couple of dozen gemstones have ever been given their own name, and it is extremely unusual to encounter a gemstone weighing more than 1,000 carats, Gemfields said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weighing 7,525 carats (1.505 kg), Chipembele \u2013 which means \u2018rhino\u2019 in the local indigenous dialect of Bemba \u2013 has earned a place in this exclusive club, and a name to match. The discovery of Chipembele follows Insofu (Bemba for \u2018elephant\u2019 \u2013 discovered in 2010) and Inkalamu (\u2018lion\u2019 – 2018), all of which were formed within relatively close proximity at the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, which is the world\u2019s single largest producing emerald mine, owned by Gemfields in partnership with the Zambian government\u2019s Industrial Development Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This remarkable gem will reportedly be on display at GJEPC\u2019s 4th India Rough Gemstones Sourcing Show<\/a>, currently being held in Jaipur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipembele was discovered on 13th July 2021 by geologist Manas Banerjee and Richard Kapeta (who was also the team leader for the discovery of Inkalamu in October 2018) and his team at Kagem. The discovery, they said, \u201cleft everyone speechless\u201d. Kapeta shouted in joy, \u201clook at this rhino horn!\u201d And hence, the gemstone found its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipembele formed under near perfect conditions, allowing the combination of the elements beryllium, chromium and vanadium to crystalise into large, distinct hexagonal crystal structures with glassy surfaces. The recovery of such a large high-quality emerald is extremely rare. The rich, golden green hue and gemmy nature of this emerald will be appealing to buyers looking to yield fine quality faceted emeralds after the cutting and polishing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winning bidder for Chipembele will be given the option of a unique DNA nano-tag identity, developed by G\u00fcbelin Gem Lab, ensuring that the cut and polished gems that it yields can be identified and certified as having originated from this extraordinary gemstone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipembele stands proud as the largest of the three significant finds at Kagem emerald mine, with Insofu weighing in at 6,225 carats and Inkalamu at 5,655.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
