{"id":13196,"date":"2021-12-28T13:56:31","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T08:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/?p=13196"},"modified":"2021-12-28T13:57:17","modified_gmt":"2021-12-28T08:27:17","slug":"jewellery-business-sparkles-in-us-holiday-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/jewellery-business-sparkles-in-us-holiday-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewellery Business Sparkles in US Holiday Season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>In the midst of the\u00a0Holiday\u00a0Season,\u00a0Solitaire International\u00a0caught up with a slew of independent retailers selling fine and high jewellery.\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the board, retailers in the US are reporting robust holiday sales, backed by bullish figures published by industry trade publications this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centurion, which conducted a spot survey earlier this month, reports that&nbsp;70%&nbsp;of jewellers confirm that business was up by more than&nbsp;10%&nbsp;on last year for the same period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adapting to continued disruption from the pandemic with improved ways to communicate with customers, some of America&#8217;s longest-serving independent jewellers&nbsp;are standing in better stead than anyone could have imagined at the onset of&nbsp;Covid-19.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFine jewellery is very strong, especially towards&nbsp;the higher end of fine,\u201d says Peggy Grosz, Senior Vice President at Assael, a 75-year-old pearl business.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an inventory that spans both classic and traditional jewellery, the company has begun to rely more on great photography to communicate with customers, ahead of completing a sale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most definitive way that we have adapted to the pandemic is that we depend upon high quality professional photography more, because shipping has become somewhat problematic,\u201d she says. \u201cWe do not ship goods on memo until the retailer has, at least, seen the pieces or designs we are proposing to ship for specific requests made by their clients.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13202 lazyload\" width=\"410\" height=\"379\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy.jpg 800w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-768x711.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-450x417.jpg 450w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-225x208.jpg 225w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-20x19.jpg 20w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RF77-Copy-104x96.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Xpandable\u00a0diamond ring by\u00a0Picchiotti.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher-priced, finer items, such as fine strands of pearls, the company\u2019s Colors Collection pieces, which are mostly one&nbsp;of a kind, and the Bubble Collection by Sean Gilson for Assael, are amongst their best-selling items. \u201cOurs is a particularly modern and fresh take on pearl jewellery,\u201d she says. \u201cPearls have clearly been more and more prominent in the last three years. It has affected sales of our very fine jewellery quite noticeably, from the classic strand to the more&nbsp;designer&nbsp;collections&nbsp;mentioned above. The consumer has learned about pearl quality and is requesting fine quality pearls.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London Jewelers operates out of Glen Cove, New York, and has several locations in the New York and Long Island areas. London Jewelers is a retailer of luxury jewelry, fine jewellery brands and watches in the US.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott Saunders, Senior VP-Business Development, reports,&nbsp;\u201cSales are strong across the board in jewellery and watches. Important pieces are selling very well.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds: \u201cLayering has been a big trend, as well as everyday wearable jewellery, as people&#8217;s styles have become a bit more casual. Classic diamond jewellery has also been very strong this year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all retailers, \u201cWe have had to adapt to whatever came our way. We sell in store,&nbsp;online, virtually, on Instagram, Facebook. We have tried to reach the client in whatever way they felt most comfortable shopping with us,\u201d he adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right partnerships help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are happy that our clients have supported&nbsp;us, and&nbsp;we are thrilled to have the right brand partnerships and merchandise in our stores,\u201d he adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Craig Underwood at Underwood Jewelers, says it&#8217;s the best year that the company has ever had, and reports a strong demand for large ticket items.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underwood\u2019s custom jewellery house&nbsp;specialises&nbsp;in the fine quality segment.&nbsp; It is based in Fayetteville.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cOur business for fine jewellery has been very strong, especially for fine quality custom jewellery,\u201d he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the pandemic, it is a \u201ccomplete turnaround from where we were a year ago,\u201d he says. \u201cWe continue to have and maintain practices that we hope put our customers&#8217; minds at ease, but they are less stringent than before. \u201c&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underwood says this has been the year of the large natural diamond.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything&nbsp;from large diamond rings&nbsp;to large diamond earrings to large diamond bracelets is selling well,\u201d he says. \u201cWe choose to only sell natural diamonds here at Underwood\u2019s.&nbsp; And while&nbsp;we have had a few requests for synthetic diamonds, we feel we are better off focusing on natural diamonds.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other prominent trends include yellow gold and rose gold gaining in popularity.&nbsp; \u201cIn bridal, we still sell more white metal &#8211; platinum and white gold &#8211; but yellow gold is certainly gaining ground,\u201d he says.&nbsp; \u201cWe are finding that in both fashion and bridal, the overall style seems to embrace the&nbsp;classics.&nbsp; Our customers are more focused on a larger&nbsp;centre&nbsp;stone with a classic design rather than an ornate or recognizable mounting style.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria Carola&nbsp;Picchiotti, Marketing Director at&nbsp;&nbsp;Picchiotti, notes that investments in jewellery are on the rise.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-661x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13200 lazyload\" width=\"320\" height=\"496\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-661x1024.jpg 661w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-768x1189.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-450x697.jpg 450w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-225x348.jpg 225w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-20x31.jpg 20w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1-62x96.jpg 62w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/ECO-FIJIPRD1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Fijian pearls and peridot earrings from the Colors collection by Assael.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the peak of the pandemic, and the lockdowns, we have been observing that anyone who decides to spend money on jewellery will be looking to make a sort of investment, purchasing a piece of jewellery that, besides having good design and excellent workmanship, should also feature superlative gemstones, giving it an intrinsic value,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is why business for high jewellery has been strong this year with some important sales that have confirmed this trend,\u201d she adds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fine jewellery is also doing well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough it is in a slightly lower price range, and some of the pieces may not be as unique as the masterpieces,&nbsp;Picchiotti&nbsp;fine jewellery is still quite important and the creations are long-lasting and valuable,\u201d she adds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t give up has been their answer to navigating the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have simply continued doing what we have been doing for more than the 50 years that we have been in business by striving for excellence. Large, colorful stones adorning our hands are trending like never before.
