Sotheby\u2019s New York said its sale of \u201cMagnificent Jewels\u201d on 16th<\/sup> June achieved a total of $52 million. The star lot featured a 101.41-carat D colour internally flawless pear-shaped diamond that sold for $13 million. The result places the stone among the highest prices ever achieved for a D colour, flawless or internally flawless diamond over 100 carats at auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously called the \u201cJuno Diamond\u201d, the magnificent stone was purchased over the phone by a private collector in Asia, who, shortly after the sale, renamed the jewel the \u201cClaire G Diamond,\u201d in dedication to his wife. Together with this week\u2019s sale of fine jewels, Sotheby\u2019s worldwide jewellery auctions have surpassed $230 million to date \u2013 an increase of 14% over the same period in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quig Bruning, Head of Jewels, Sotheby\u2019s Americas, said: \u201cWe are thrilled to see this exceptional diamond achieve such a strong result \u2013 confirmation that there\u2019s ongoing demand from collectors at the highest levels of the market. This diamond captivated clients around the world through our extensive travels this spring, but it was a particular privilege to offer it at our global headquarters, where it now ranks among the top five jewels sold in Sotheby\u2019s New York salesroom. Including today\u2019s result, only five perfect pear-shaped diamonds weighing over 100 carats have sold at auction, of which Sotheby\u2019s has sold four.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catharine Becket, Head of Sotheby\u2019s Magnificent Jewels sale in New York, added: \u201cWhen curating our Magnificent Jewels sales, we\u2019re continually on the hunt for not only extraordinary, timeless designs but also for of-the-moment jewels and gemstones that signal growth areas in the market. In particular, it\u2019s been thrilling to witness the increase in our clients\u2019 appetite for stones beyond the standard canon of diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, and to see the evolution in their appreciation for specimen stones, such as the Paraiba Tourmaline and Diamond Pendant Necklace, which sold for an incredible $1.2 million. We also saw exceptional results for signed jewels by the iconic maisons, including a Mystery-Set Ruby Holly Leaf brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels that sold for nearly $1 million.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collectors vied for red carpet-worthy necklaces, including a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond \u201cBoreal\u2019 necklace (pictured below<\/em>) that sold for $1.2 million (est. $1 – 1.5 million), and a sapphire and diamond-pendant necklace by Harry Winston, which realised $1 million (est. $800,000 – 1.2 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
