The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI), a collaboration between The Copper Mark, Mining Association of Canada, ICMM, and World Gold Council, has unveiled a draft consolidated standard, governance model, assurance process, and related reporting and claims policy. The initiative aims to streamline the complex landscape of mining standards and promote responsible practices across the metal and mineral value chain.<\/p>\n
The CMSI’s vision is to create a sustainable society through responsible metal and mineral production, sourcing, and recycling. The consolidated standard is designed to be applicable to any mining facility worldwide that is committed to environmental, social, and governance excellence.<\/p>\n
Once finalized, the standard is expected to be adopted by a wide range of mining companies, from small-scale operations to large multinationals. This broad adoption could make the CMSI standard the most widely used voluntary mining standard to date, with potential implementation by nearly 100 mining companies across 600 operations in approximately 60 countries.<\/p>\n
The CMSI is seeking input from stakeholders during a 60-day public consultation period. Interested parties can provide their views and suggestions online until 16th<\/sup> December, 2024. A second, shorter consultation is planned for 2025.<\/p>\n Terry Heymann, Chief Financial Officer of The World Gold Council, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The new, consolidated Standard will create a simplified system that serves the needs of all stakeholders, sets a high bar for responsible mining, and drives continuous improvement across the entire mining and metals industry.”<\/p>\n The CMSI’s development has been guided by ISEAL’s Codes of Good Practice, ensuring a transparent and inclusive process.
