The European Commission has sanctioned \u20ac81 million in Spanish state aid to support Diamond Foundry Europe in establishing a semiconductor-grade synthetic diamond production facility in Trujillo, Extremadura, Spain. The new factory, valued at \u20ac675 million, will leverage advanced plasma reactor technology to produce synthetic diamond wafers, catering to sectors like 5G networks and electric vehicles.<\/p>\n
Designed to be carbon-neutral and powered by renewable energy, the plant is expected to generate 300 direct jobs, alongside additional indirect employment opportunities. With an annual production capacity of 4-5 million carats, this initiative aligns with EU priorities for economic development, job creation, and the green transition.<\/p>\n
The Commission deemed the measure essential, proportionate, and compliant with EU state aid rules, emphasising its positive regional impact while minimising competitive distortions.<\/p>\n
Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, stated: \u201cToday\u2019s decision enables Spain to support Diamond Foundry Europe in setting-up its first factory in Europe to produce semiconductor-grade rough synthetic diamonds. This will foster the transition to a decarbonised economy and competitiveness.
