Kevin Ferreira, a graduate gemmologist and specialist in Para\u00edba sourcing and education, brings a deeply personal perspective. \u201cMy family\u2019s involvement in gemstones began before I was born,\u201d he says. With a lineage of lapidaries and miners from Minas Gerais in Brazil to Africa, Kevin\u2019s journey into the world of gems was predestined. But it wasn\u2019t until he began visiting family-run mines that he truly fell in love with the journey of Para\u00edba tourmaline.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted and continue to want to share that love I developed with others who seemingly know very little about the true origins of the stone,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin\u2019s desire to shed light on the authentic story of Para\u00edba translated into the book for which he teamed up with fellow gemmologist Carlos Torres, and eventually Katerina Perez. Kevin\u2019s friend and fellow gemmologist Carlos Torres (Director of the Para\u00edba\u00a0 Book) came up with the idea of a beautiful book that could tell the story and show the evolution into jewellery.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCarlos Torres, a mutual friend and a gem specialist, introduced us knowing how passionate I am about Para\u00edbas. Honestly, it didn\u2019t take much persuasion,\u201d adds Katerina.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>is small team<\/span> spent over two years, going to the mines, <\/span>conducting <\/span>interviews<\/span> and<\/span> gathering data. <\/span>The book, deeply researched, was a result of a true meeting of minds \u2014 science and art \u2014working together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Katerina, who helmed the design front, curated jewellery stories, reaching out to brands across the world and seeking out those that championed the stone in varied, enriching ways. \u201cKevin took the lead on the mining side \u2014 origins, properties, and the technical backbone \u2014 while I focused on the design angle: its use in jewellery, its red-carpet appearances, and auction history,\u201d Katerina says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A staunch admirer of the gemstone, Katerina had always been drawn to the Para\u00edba\u2019s charm and its electrifying hue. \u201cIt\u2019s the vibrancy that gets me \u2014 the electric, swimming-pool blue that you simply don\u2019t see in any other gemstone,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not just beautiful \u2014 it demands a conversation. It\u2019s not just pretty \u2014 it\u2019s precious, elusive, and powerful.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin\u2019s love for the gemstone remains deep-rooted but for different reasons. \u201cLet\u2019s set aside for a moment the obvious difficulties of finding deposits, extraction, cutting, setting delicately into jewellery,\u201d he says. \u201cLet me just touch on the lives involved in the sourcing of this gemstone.\u201d There are less than a dozen organised Para\u00edba\u00a0 mine operations in the world, Kevin remarks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He elaborates on the resilient, faith-driven individuals who diligently search across Brazil and Africa for this gem. \u201cThe miners always tell me that their operations \u2018run on faith and not diesel.\u201d Despite the staggering mining costs and uncertainty \u2014 up to $150,000 per month in Africa, often yielding little to no reward \u2014 they persist. \u201cThis makes for some of the most resilient and strong, driven personalities who <\/span>love what they do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Para\u00edba <\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span> The Legacy of a Color<\/span><\/i> also shines the light on designers who understand the soul of the stone. Kevin highlights Qannati, a brand known for its innovative approach to jewellery and heirlooms, as well as Saurabh Bhola, a rising talent whose renderings bring fresh perspective. \u201cHe submitted a wonderful rendering for the book,\u201d shares Kevin.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Katerina, for her part, curated a diverse range of maisons and independent designers. \u201cIt was never about choosing the most famous brands,\u201d she says. \u201cI looked for pieces where the gem wasn\u2019t just used for sparkle, but where it was the soul of the design.\u201d It was also important for Katerina to showcase that Para\u00edba\u00a0 is used in so many different forms: faceted, rough, carved, tumbled. Names like Doris Hangartner and Jochen Le\u00ebn appear in the book for their reverence and unique interpretations of the gem. \u201cTheir creations honour the power of the stone while presenting it in sophisticated and often unexpected ways. We were careful to select pieces that reflect the rarity and energy of Para\u00edba, whether through their design, quality, or the stories they tell,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Para\u00edba <\/span>is <\/span>now rising in global significance<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span>n observation echoed by<\/span> Katerina<\/span>. She<\/span> points to its scarcity<\/span> as the primary reason. \u201cMozambique is now the key source, but even that supply is limited.\u201d<\/span> Referencing the Para\u00edba, she says that the \u201ccolour is unforgettable \u2014 it has a glow that you really don\u2019t find elsewhere.\u201d The third reason<\/span>, she observes, <\/span>is the growing sophistication among jewellery <\/span>lovers.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>They <\/span>want gems with stories, with character, and Para\u00edba ticks every box<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, <\/span>Para\u00edba <\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span> The Legacy of a Color<\/span><\/i> is a tribute to beauty, resilience and the human spirit. As Kevin puts it: \u201c<\/span>The vision is to have more people understand the story of the gem and the process that takes to get the gem to the market and then transformed into jewellery<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
