The original plan\u2014known as the \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs\u2014stemmed from an 2 April national emergency declaration aimed at addressing the U.S. trade deficit. Under that policy, a 10% baseline tariff, together with higher country\u2011specific rates, was to take effect in early April.<\/p>\n
After a 90-day suspension expired at 12:01\u202fa.m.\u202fEDT on 9 July, Trump chose to extend the pause another three weeks, defining the new cutoff as 12:01\u202fa.m.\u202fEDT on 1 August.<\/p>\n
