Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The term \u201clast precious metal\u201d\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0imply that osmium was discovered later than gold or platinum\u2014it has always existed alongside the other platinum group metals. What makes it the\u00a0<\/span>last<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is the fact that it is the final element to enter the jewellery and investment market in a wearable, certified form.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From a scientific perspective, the periodic table is complete. Every element is already known, and no new precious metals are expected to\u00a0emerge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So,\u00a0osmium is the last of the naturally occurring precious elements whose properties have only recently been made suitable for jewellery through crystallisation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why the term resonates\u2014it truly marks the end of the line in precious metal discovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How rare is osmium when compared with metals like gold or platinum?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It is in a completely different league. Osmium is mined only as a by-product of platinum. To give you a sense of scale, from 10,000 tonnes of platinum ore,\u00a0one can\u00a0extract\u00a0roughly 30\u00a0grams of osmium.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we first began working with osmium, we believed much larger quantities existed. Over time, we realised that many suppliers were referencing the same limited stock. Today, the most realistic estimate is that less than 350-500 kilograms of\u00a0ethically mined\u00a0osmium will ever be available globally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To give you a sense of scale, if you melt down all the gold ever mined, it\u00a0will\u00a0form a cube\u00a0of\u00a0more than 20 metres high. All the osmium that can ever be crystallised and used would fit under two or three chairs.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the level of scarcity\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0talking about.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With crystallisation nearing its global limits, how do you manage long-term supply continuity?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Osmium\u00a0operates\u00a0on a\u00a0<\/span>finite-resource<\/span><\/i>\u00a0model. It is essentially \u201cfirst come, first served.\u201d Once it is gone, it is gone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, it cannot\u00a0be reused. Unlike gold, you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0melt it down, but you can unset it and reset it\u2014much like a gemstone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some brands secure quantities in advance and store them with us under contractual agreements. Others pre-order specific cuts that we\u00a0hold\u00a0and release as\u00a0required. These mechanisms allow brands to plan collections while accepting that osmium is not a mass-market material\u2014it is inherently limited.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How is osmium priced, and how should jewellers understand its weight and value?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>At present, osmium is priced per gram\u2014around \u20ac2,400 per gram. However, that often creates confusion because jewellers assume they need multiple grams, as they would with gold. In reality, osmium is used in fractions of a gram.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One carat of osmium equals 0.2 grams. A ring or pendant may\u00a0contain\u00a0as little as that. We are actively considering a shift to carat-based pricing because it aligns better with how jewellers and consumers understand\u00a0the\u00a0value\u00a0of an inlay material\u00a0when\u00a0used like a gemstone.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does one\u00a0purchase\u00a0osmium?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The simplest way is to buy it online through our\u00a0webshop, where individual pieces are clearly listed\u2014you can select and add them directly to your basket. If\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0looking for standardised shapes,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0even easier. We offer a range of forms such as hearts,\u00a0squares\u00a0and circles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What truly sets osmium apart, though, is the ability to create custom shapes. Almost any flat design is possible. All we need is a CAD file or a technical drawing, based on which we share a cost estimate and\u00a0proceed\u00a0with the order. Every piece is cut and certified in\u00a0Germany,\u00a0and\u00a0sold into different countries through our partner networks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it cut by hand?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>No. Osmium is cut using wire EDM cutting\u2014a machine-led process that is extremely precise, even more so than laser cutting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell us about the peculiar characteristics of osmium.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Osmium is inherently very thin\u2014between\u00a0\u00a00.2\u00a0and 1.4\u00a0millimetres\u2014and the quality\u00a0remains\u00a0consistent throughout. Unlike gemstones, there are no grades as such. Instead, osmium is defined by different sparkle levels.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The purity is the same across the board; what changes is the thickness of the piece. Thicker sections form larger individual crystals, and larger crystals reflect more light back to the eye. A Sparkle 1 offers a smooth, even surface with a gentle shimmer, while a Sparkle 5 delivers bold, dramatic flashes of light\u2014almost like\u00a0strobe effects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s\u00a0no better or worse here. It simply comes down to the look you want to achieve in your design.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheela Suthar:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>India has always embraced rarity\u2014be it gemstones, metals, or heritage jewellery.\u00a0We believe\u00a0osmium fits naturally into that mindset. It appeals strongly to collectors, high-end clients, and jewellery connoisseurs, but it\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0restricted to a single price bracket.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because osmium is typically used as an inlay rather than a dominant metal, it can be incorporated into designs across a wide range of budgets. Even a small piece carries meaning because of its rarity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0not about volume\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0about owning something that very few people in the world will ever have.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are Indian jewellers already experimenting with osmium?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheela Suthar:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Our approach is two-fold. We are engaging with large corporate jewellery houses and\u00a0established\u00a0fine jewellers, while also introducing osmium to individual collectors as both jewellery and an investment asset.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through\u00a0Ancom\u00a0Lifestyles and our partner platforms, we are already educating clients, offering certified pieces, and\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0how osmium can be integrated into contemporary design. This\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0a future plan\u2014it has already begun.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheela Suthar:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Over the last seven years, osmium prices have grown more than fourfold\u2014from\u00a0roughly\u00a0\u00a0\u20ac500 per gram to over\u00a0\u20ac2,000\u00a0per gram. Its value is driven purely by scarcity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you look at gemstones like old Burmese rubies that are no longer mined,\u00a0you begin to\u00a0understand the trajectory.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once supply stops, value only moves in one direction. Osmium follows the same logic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Has osmium entered the global auction ecosystem yet?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>We are currently developing projects with\u00a0major auction houses. Beyond jewellery, osmium has already appeared in major statement pieces\u2014one notable example being an osmium-inlaid violin that debuted with a starting price of \u20ac4 million.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These \u201clighthouse projects\u201d\u00a0establish\u00a0osmium\u2019s credibility in the ultra-luxury space. Jewellery and\u00a0objets\u00a0d\u2019art will follow that path.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes osmium certification different from diamonds or precious metals?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarlett Clauss:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Osmium\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0rely on external certification alone. Its crystalline surface\u00a0<\/span>is the<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>certificate. Each piece has a unique structure\u2014like a fingerprint\u2014recorded under an Osmium Identification Code (OIC)\u00a0linked to a high-resolution scan in a database. By simply comparing a photo of the piece with the database image, even a layperson can confirm its authenticity. This built-in, user-verifiable identity is why luxury brands value osmium: once incorporated into a watch,\u00a0ring\u00a0or accessory, it cannot be replicated, and authenticity can be checked by anyone\u2014something no other material can truly offer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
