This year\u2019s IIJS Bharat Signature,\u00a0the highlight at BEC, Hall\u00a04\u00a0 was\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Crafts Pavilion<\/span><\/b>\u00a0where<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>country\u2019s masterful craft traditions and the way they continue to shape\u00a0modern jewellery design.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third in our series of crafts is\u00a0Thewa\u2014a craft that uniquely marries gold and glass.\u00a0Practised by a close-knit family in\u00a0Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, for generations, the\u00a0art is regarded as a near-sacred legacy passed down to future generations.\u00a0At the show\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>Raghav\u00a0Rajsoni<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0a sixth-generation artist from the celebrated\u00a0Rajsoni\u00a0family of\u00a0Pratapgarh,\u00a0who\u00a0has inherited not just technical mastery, but\u00a0is\u00a0a living legacy shaped under the guidance of his father, the late Shri Mahesh\u00a0Rajsoni, a Padma Shri awardee and one of the most respected names in\u00a0Thewa\u00a0art.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Raghav\u00a0<\/span>Rajsoni<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>holds a\u00a0<\/span>bachelor\u2019s degree in commerce<\/span>, giving him a sound understanding of business and economics, followed by an LLB that strengthened his legal insight. Driven to take the\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>rt of\u00a0<\/span>Thewa<\/span>\u00a0to a wider global audience, he went on to study Luxury Brand Management at the London School of Arts. This exposure has helped him bridge heritage\u00a0<\/span>craftsmanship<\/span>\u00a0with contemporary branding, positioning\u00a0<\/span>Thewa<\/span>\u00a0on an international platform while staying true to its roots.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rajsoni\u00a0has represented India at various esteemed international events aimed at promoting the traditional art form of\u00a0Thewa.\u00a0Supported by the Government of India, he has\u00a0showcased\u00a0the art\u00a0the International Exhibition of Handicrafts, Taraz, Kazakhstan (2023), Namaste France, Paris (2023), and Bharat Utsav, Moscow, Russia (2025).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the show, he was accompanied by his cousin, <\/span>Pawan Kumar Soni,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0who is an exceptional\u00a0thewa\u00a0artist in his own right.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thewa\u00a0is one of India\u2019s most\u00a0distinctive jewellery arts, where\u00a0gold and glass come together\u00a0in a marriage of patience,\u00a0precision, and storytelling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Originating over four centuries\u00a0ago in\u00a0Pratapgarh,\u00a0Rajasthan,\u00a0this rare craft\u00a0remains\u00a0closely\u00a0guarded by a handful of\u00a0families, passed down through\u00a0generations with staunch\u00a0devotion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thewa\u00a0involves hand-working\u00a0wafer-thin sheets of 23\u201324 karat\u00a0gold into intricate patterns\u00a0inspired floral vines, peacocks,\u00a0hunting scenes, and episodes\u00a0from Indian\u00a0epics are delicately\u00a0pierced and engraved, often so\u00a0fine that they resemble lace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This gold filigree is then fused\u00a0on to molten, coloured glass\u2014most commonly deep ruby\u00a0red,\u00a0emerald green, or sapphire\u00a0blue\u2014creating a luminous\u00a0contrast that gives\u00a0Thewa\u00a0its\u00a0unmistakable depth and glow.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The process is painstaking.\u00a0The gold sheet is first flattened\u00a0and etched entirely by hand,\u00a0without sketches. Once the\u00a0design is complete, it is\u00a0carefully placed on heated glass\u00a0and bonded using controlled\u00a0heat and skill honed over\u00a0decades. Any error at this stage\u00a0means starting afresh. The\u00a0finished panel is then framed\u00a0in gold or silver to create\u00a0pendants, necklaces, earrings,\u00a0bangles, or ceremonial pieces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Historically patronised by\u00a0Rajput royalty,\u00a0Thewa\u00a0jewellery\u00a0was treasured not only for\u00a0its beauty but also for its\u00a0symbolism\u2014often gifted during\u00a0weddings and important\u00a0milestones. Today, while\u00a0contemporary formats have\u00a0emerged, the essence of\u00a0Thewa\u00a0remains\u00a0unchanged:\u00a0meticulous\u00a0craftsmanship, pure materials,\u00a0and narrative-rich design.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
