Long recognised for its manufacturing excellence and gemstone expertise, the country is increasingly producing luxury houses that are earning recognition for their design philosophy, craftsmanship and exceptional gemstones. Founded in Delhi in 1968, the House of Alok Lodha has spent nearly six decades cultivating expertise in gemstones and fine jewellery. Its origins lie in the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk, where the family established itself through a deep understanding of coloured gemstones and jewellery making. In its early years, it became known for finely crafted coloured gemstone bangles and its expertise in chuna moti<\/em>. \u201cThe gemstone is always the starting point and the focal point of the design process,\u201d says Alok Lodha. \u201cWe spend time understanding its character, proportions, colour, brilliance, presence and story before a single sketch is made.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the House of Alok Lodha, the gemstone dictates the design, never the other way around. \u201cI have never viewed craftsmanship and contemporary design as separate pursuits,\u201d Lodha says. \u201cCraftsmanship is a living practice, and its relevance comes from its ability to evolve with time.\u201d<\/p>\n

That balance between heritage and innovation has become increasingly important as the next generation joins the business.<\/p>\n

His children, Pranav, Ashwin and Nitisha Lodha, have each assumed distinct responsibilities within the company, bringing fresh perspectives while remaining aligned with the family\u2019s long-established values. Pranav is leading expansion across the Middle East; Ashwin is strengthening the brand\u2019s retail footprint across India; and Nitisha contributes to the creative direction of the maison.<\/p>\n

Rather than fundamentally changing the business, their contribution has been evolutionary. Contemporary materials, new design ideas and different ways of engaging younger collectors have broadened the house\u2019s appeal without diluting its identity.<\/p>\n

This multigenerational continuity is reflected not only within the business but also among its clientele.<\/p>\n

\u201cJewellery is ultimately a business built on trust,\u201d says Lodha. \u201cMany of our clients are families with whom we work across multiple generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those long-standing relationships have become one of the defining characteristics of the house. While younger collectors may express themselves differently and embrace more contemporary aesthetics, their appreciation for exceptional gemstones and thoughtful craftsmanship remains unchanged.<\/p>\n

The maison is also steadily expanding its international footprint. Its debut at the prestigious COUTURE show in Las Vegas marked an important milestone, while growing interest from collectors across North America and the Middle East reflects the increasing global appetite for Indian high jewellery.<\/p>\n

Despite geopolitical uncertainty, shifting trade routes and ongoing supply chain challenges, the House of Alok Lodha has remained relatively insulated. Long established relationships within the gemstone trade have provided continuity in sourcing while reinforcing the importance of provenance and transparency.<\/p>\n

Some realities, however, remain unchanged.<\/p>\n

\u201cBurmese rubies continue to be exceptionally difficult to acquire,\u201d Lodha notes.<\/p>\n

That scarcity reflects a broader trend increasingly shaping the high jewellery market. Collectors are recognising that the world\u2019s finest coloured gemstones and diamonds are finite resources. In periods of economic uncertainty, rarity, provenance and exceptional quality continue to distinguish the most sought-after jewels.<\/p>\n

Yet for Lodha, collecting has always been driven by something more enduring than investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur clients have always been motivated primarily by a passion for exceptional gemstones and finely handcrafted jewels,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
