The inspirational story of <\/em>Mr. Vallabhbhai Patel, Founder, Kiran Gems<\/strong>, is deeply rooted in Bhojpara, Bhavnagar. Born into a farming family and raised amid the rhythms and realities of rural life, Mr. Patel learnt the value of hard work from an early age. Those early lessons stayed with him as he embarked on a remarkable journey from the polishing wheel to the boardroom.<\/em><\/p>\n

At the tender age of 13, he stepped into a diamond polishing workshop in Bhavnagar, beginning a seven-year apprenticeship that taught him the craft from the ground up. His journey was anything but easy. His first business venture in 1978 failed, leaving him with debts, but Mr. Patel repaid them and began again. Failure did not deter him; instead, it strengthened his resolve to start afresh. Eventually, he laid the foundation for what would become Kiran Gems, one of the world\u2019s largest natural diamond manufacturers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yet, for Mr. Patel, success has never been measured only in diamonds, exports or enterprise. His philanthropic footprint spans education, healthcare, farmer livelihoods, women\u2019s employment and support for fatherless girls and the families of fallen soldiers. His is a story of grit, growth and giving back. <\/em><\/p>\n

Some business journeys are measured in turnover, milestones and market share. Others are measured by the number of lives they touch. Mr. Vallabhbhai Patel\u2019s story belongs to both.<\/p>\n

The Founder of Kiran Gems, Mr. Patel has spent more than five decades in the diamond industry. His journey began with little more than determination, a willingness to learn and hard work. Today, Kiran Gems employs more than 45,000 people across India, the US, Hong Kong, the UAE, China and Belgium. Along the way, Mr. Patel has helped shape not just a company, but an entire industry ecosystem.<\/p>\n

Yet the numbers tell only part of the story.<\/p>\n

Starting from the ground up<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born into a farming family in Bhojpara, in Gujarat\u2019s Bhavnagar district, Mr. Patel\u2019s formal education ended after the fourth standard. At 13, he joined a diamond polishing workshop in Bhavnagar as a trainee. For the next seven years, he learnt the trade by hand, sorting, cutting and polishing diamonds, while returning every monsoon to work on the family farm.<\/p>\n

It was an education no business school could replicate. He learnt the diamond business from the factory floor and farming from the land, gaining an understanding of both the worker and the farmer.<\/p>\n

These early experiences would go on to shape his approach to business and philanthropy. His first independent venture, launched in 1978, was modest. He traded single-cut diamonds from Bhavnagar and travelled regularly to Mumbai to sell them. The business, however, did not go as planned and eventually failed. With support from his father, he repaid his debts and began again.<\/p>\n

In 1982, he moved his operations to Mumbai. Three years later, in 1985, he and his brothers, Mr. Mavjibhai S. Patel and Mr. Babubhai S. Lakhani, started a new venture from a small office in Pancharatna, Opera House. That venture would come to be known as Kiran Gems. The rest is a remarkable chapter in India\u2019s diamond story.<\/p>\n

Building Kiran Gems<\/strong><\/p>\n

The early ambition was not simply to become big. It was to do the work well, build trust with buyers and remain committed to learning. The company\u2019s growth followed that philosophy.<\/p>\n

The Indian Government recognised Kiran Gems as an Export House in 1996 and a Trading House in 1999. Its international reach expanded with Kiran Exports BVBA in Antwerp and partnerships across<\/p>\n

Southeast Asia. Mr. Patel\u2019s hands-on understanding of everything from rough procurement and manufacturing to customer relationships and international markets gave him a command of the entire value chain.<\/p>\n

Over the decades, Kiran Gems grew into one of the world\u2019s largest natural diamond manufacturers, with a workforce exceeding 45,000 and operations spanning six countries. The company\u2019s record reflects that scale. Kiran Gems was recognised by the GJEPC as the Highest Exporter of Cut and Polished Diamonds for 16 years between 2007 and 2024. It has also received recognition for Highest Taxpayer in the gem and jewellery sector, Highest Turnover and Most Socially Responsible Company for 2016 and 2017.<\/p>\n

Thinking beyond Kiran Gems<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Patel\u2019s vision extended beyond building a successful company. He saw an opportunity to strengthen the infrastructure supporting India\u2019s diamond industry itself.<\/p>\n

That vision took shape in the Surat Diamond Bourse. Surat had long been the manufacturing heart of the global diamond trade, but trading and exports remained heavily dependent on Mumbai. Mr. Patel became a driving force behind the creation of the bourse and later took on the role of chairman.<\/p>\n

The project brought together more than 4,500 offices for domestic and international traders on land allocated by the Gujarat Government under its Dream City initiative. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2023.<\/p>\n

The idea, however, was not universally welcomed at first, even within Mr. Patel\u2019s own trade circle and family. Bringing competitors together behind a common objective required persistence, patience and conviction.<\/p>\n

His philosophy is simple: \u201cProgress is not meaningful when it benefits only one person. It becomes meaningful when it moves an entire industry forward.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

A Second Act<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having built Kiran Gems into a global natural diamond powerhouse, Mr. Patel was not ready to rest on his laurels. His next venture, KIRA, took him into laboratory grown diamonds and CVD technology. The business has grown into one of the world\u2019s largest CVD diamond producers, with thousands of employees and a manufacturing base in Surat powered substantially by solar energy.<\/p>\n

Its ambition is captured in the brand\u2019s tagline, har ghar hira, har ghar KIRA<\/em>, a diamond in every home. Mr. Patel has viewed laboratory grown diamonds as a way of opening diamond ownership to a much wider population.<\/p>\n

Giving success a wider meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Mr. Patel, however, they represent much more than size and scale. They represent livelihoods and families whose futures are connected to those livelihoods; employment is not merely a business metric. It is about dignity, income, security and the ability of a family to plan for the future.<\/p>\n

That philosophy extends into his philanthropic work, particularly initiatives supporting women\u2019s employment and economic independence.<\/p>\n

His connection to farming has remained equally strong. The son of a farmer never stopped seeing land as livelihood and security rather than simply an asset. His support for farmers and livelihood-generating initiatives reflects values formed long before he became an industrialist.<\/p>\n

Education is another deeply personal priority. Having had little formal schooling himself, Mr. Patel has supported schools, girls\u2019 education and hostels, higher education and medical education. The Kiran Medical College in Vadod, Surat, under the Samast Patidar Aarogya Trust, had its foundation stone laid in March 2022, with land contributed by the Kiran Gems family.<\/p>\n

Healthcare has followed the same philosophy of creating institutions with a lasting impact. Kiran Hospital, a 900-bed multi-speciality hospital and research centre in Surat, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2017 and is today affiliated with Kiran Medical College\u2019s teaching programme.<\/p>\n

His generosity also extends to supporting the marriage and settlement of fatherless girls, helping women achieve economic independence, and providing education, healthcare and essential support to families of Indian soldiers who lost their lives in service of the nation.<\/p>\n

His guiding principle perhaps says it best: \u201cJahaan zarurat, wahaan unka kadam.\u201d <\/em>(Where there is a need, he tries to be there.)<\/p>\n

The measure of a lifetime<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than five decades into his career, Mr. Patel continues to work with an energy that colleagues describe as matching entrepreneurs half his age.<\/p>\n

Trust, family, hard work, discipline and humility have remained constants even as the scale of his achievements has changed dramatically.<\/p>\n

His individual recognition includes the Patidar Udyog Ratna Award, presented at the Global Patidar Business Summit in Gandhinagar in 2018, and the Shri Girdhargopal Mundra Award for Outstanding Businessperson from the SGCCI Golden Jubilee Memorial Trust.<\/p>\n

Yet beyond the awards and business achievements lies a broader legacy. It can be seen in the institutions he has helped build and the opportunities created for others through jobs, education, healthcare, farmers’ livelihoods, women\u2019s employment and support for families in need.<\/p>\n

That may ultimately be the true measure of a life in business. Not simply how high one rises, but how many people rise with you.<\/p>\n

For Mr. Vallabhbhai Patel, the journey from the polishing wheel to the boardroom has never been about leaving his roots behind. It has been about carrying their lessons forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a farmer\u2019s son, and I studied only up to the fourth standard. When I began cutting diamonds in 1971, I never once imagined that one day I would stand here to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. This honour is very big, and I feel very small before it.<\/p>\n

GJEPC has given this recognition not only to me, but to every ordinary person who works hard and dreams big. I must remember my father. When my first small business failed in 1978 and I was in debt, he stood behind me and gave me strength.<\/p>\n

Without his blessings, there would be no Kiran. I thank my brothers, Babubhai, Dineshbhai and Mavjibhai, who built this company with me, stone by stone. And I thank my wife and my family, who quietly carried the home while we chased the diamond.<\/p>\n

But the truth is, this award does not belong to me. It belongs to the thousands of karigars, our craftsmen, whose hands and eyes give life to every diamond. It belongs to every member of our Kiran family. They are the real winners today.<\/p>\n

I only had the good fortune to walk with them. I came from a village of a few hundred people. God, my elders, and my workers have given me far more than I ever asked for. So now my wish is simple: to keep giving back: to our workers, to Surat, and to our society.<\/p>\n
