Conducted on May 3rd-7th, the DPA-Harris Interactive poll surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,000 people. Nearly seven in ten (68%) made such a distinction with a significant majority saying that synthetic diamonds are not real because they are not \u2018natural\u2019, nor \u2018from the earth\u2019, or because they are made by people. A few Americans (16%) said that a diamond created in a factory is \u2018real\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers described real diamonds as \u2018genuine\u2019, \u2018natural\u2019 and \u2018authentic\u2019. They called laboratory-grown diamonds \u2018manmade\u2019, \u2018artificial\u2019 and \u2018imitation\u2019. \u201cDiamonds are billion-year-old treasures of the Earth that came to us very, very slowly, which makes them uniquely meaningful in today\u2019s on-demand world,\u201d said DPA CEO Jean-Marc Lieberherr. \u201cAt a time when everything \u2018artificial\u2019 aims to compete with, and replace, \u2018natural\u2019 and \u2018real\u2019, these results show consumers care about the inherent value, authenticity and symbolism that a diamond carries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added Lieberherr, \u201cThese results are important, and confirm what our consumers tell us: \u2018Real Matters\u2019\u2014a perspective shared across generations and one that cannot be replicated in a matter of weeks. The makers of synthetic diamonds calling their products \u2018real\u2019 not only goes against the spirit of existing terminology standards, in opposition of consumer belief, but they are also creating confusion in the marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new survey adds to the DPA\u2019s much larger body of research, which aims to help the industry better understand consumers, trends and perceptions around diamonds. On behalf of DPA, 360 Market Reach has conducted a national survey on \u2018Diamond Attitudes and Usage\u2019 every six months since the past two years with US millennials who have acquired a diamond over the previous 24 months. Among these consumers, consideration of synthetic diamonds has remained stable over the last year, at 70%. However, since the last survey, a diminishing number of consumers would consider synthetic diamonds for milestones such as engagements, birthdays or the birth of a child, \u201cpointing to a growing consumer realisation that synthetic diamonds lack value,\u201d said Lieberherr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"619\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-1024x619.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4917 lazyload\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-1024x619.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-768x464.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-450x272.jpg 450w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-225x136.jpg 225w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-900x544.jpg 900w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-20x11.jpg 20w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd-159x96.jpg 159w, https:\/\/gjepc.org\/solitaire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ffafaadsd.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The implications of both studies, in combination with independent diamond industry analyst Paul Ziminsky\u2019s latest findings\u2014that prices of laboratorygrown diamonds have been falling rapidly and that the price differential between a 1-carat laboratory-grown and natural diamond has increased by 71% over the last year\u2014is clear. \u201cLaboratory-grown diamonds are already distinguished from natural diamonds in terms of their origin, impurities and growth structures, and their financial and emotional worth. Simply put, they will never deliver on the promise of a real diamond precisely because they are not natural. And now we are witnessing their separation from diamonds in the marketplace as they find their inevitable place in the fashion jewellery market,\u201d said Lieberherr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of further note, while the price of laboratory-grown diamonds has been falling, demand for natural diamonds in the US reached an all-time high in 2017, climbing to $43 billion, up 4% from last year, as was announced by De Beers Group on May 17th, 2018. Over roughly the same period, Ziminsky\u2019s latest research also notes that the price of a 1-carat natural diamond increased by 5%, demonstrating healthy dynamics and strong consumer desire for diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>They (Lab-grown diamonds) will never deliver on the promise of a real diamond precisely because they are not natural.
