No examples of the royal mourning jewellery are known to survive today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cJetting\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caldwell Steele, a research gemmologist, spent hours \u201cjetting\u201d along the local beaches during the recent lockdowns, searching for sea-washed Whitby jet to incorporate into her own jewellery designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jewelleryoutlook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/JT7-D4E85C0E-9959-49A4-80EE-00CC9552F890_1_105_c.webp\" alt=\"Sarah Caldwell Steele &quot;jetting&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-24503 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Sarah Caldwell Steele \u201cjetting\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the coastline near Whitby yields the world\u2019s best gem-quality jet, it has also been found in small quantities in other areas of the British Isles such as Mull (Scotland), Somerset and Oxfordshire. Further afield, contemporary jet working communities are also &nbsp;to be found in northern Spain, Turkey, Venezuela, Siberia and the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jewelleryoutlook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/JT3-205C0920-1F1B-4336-8501-B1B1EF1DA607_1_105_c.webp\" alt=\"The carving of an anatomical heart in progress\" class=\"wp-image-24508 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The carving of an anatomical heart in progress<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caldwell Steele owns authentic pieces of finely crafted Victorian jet mourning jewellery, which can be seen in a museum section of her shop upstairs, which she also uses as her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Victorian Whitby jet mourning collar and brooch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before Queen Victoria popularised jet, it had a high status as mourning jewellery in the European royal courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was used as mourning jewellery in the British Empire following the death of King George IV in 1830.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Late in Queen Victoria\u2019s reign, jet lost popularity, triggering a slump in the local economy of Whitby where, in its heyday, some 200 factories and workshops had manufactured jet for jewellery, Caldwell Steele said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jet remained out of favour well into the 20th century as the vast scale of devastation caused by the First World War and Spanish flu, destroyed the fashion for wearing mourning jewellery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contemporary designs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, jet has reinvented itself in contemporary designs, from pendants to necklaces, earrings and cufflinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/jewelleryoutlook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/JT-1-1B3EEA40-983B-4BEC-8782-40FA775E4DD3_1_105_c.webp\" alt=\"Freeform faceted Whitby jet drop earrings\" class=\"wp-image-24505 lazyload\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freeform faceted Whitby jet drop earrings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are however starting to see a demand for something beyond the basic silver and gold settings,\u201d Caldwell Steele said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCustomers are certainly invested in the heritage of jet but we are breathing new life into the ancient material by combining it with bright colours, playing with freeform facets and carving unexpected themes. Jet has no trademark.
