“Clean-Up” of Nunavut’s Only Diamond Mine, Jericho, to Proceed as Planned

As per the December 22, 2016 screening report of the Nunavut Impact Review Board,  the “remediation and stabilisation” plan of the federal government will be implemented in the spring and summer of 2017 say media reports out of Canada, as long as the terms and conditions – covering some 63 points – are met. These include   wildlife  protection, waste disposal, water use  and other such aspects. The mine is currently owned by the Government of Canada.

Though the final approval is awaited from the Minister of  Canada’s Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Carolyn Bennett, no hitch is expected in proceeding as per plan as it was her department which had submitted the plan in the  first place.

A final attempt by Crystal Exploration, a junior mining company to delay  the “clean-up” has proved ineffectual, as INAC  (Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Canada) is of the  opinion that Crystal is not in a position to “provide the necessary security and take on the liability at this time” media reports say.

“Although the proposed project may somewhat diminish the site assets, the majority of the important mine infrastructure (i.e. the truck shop, processing plant and airstrip) would remain intact,” media sources quote the report as saying.  “INAC would be open to revisiting the re-commercialisation of the mine at a future date after the site stabilisation is complete.”
