Bonhams’ Hong Kong Sale, Rare Jewels & Jadeite to Feature Some Choice Gems

Come tomorrow, and Bonhams Hong Kong will open its auction Rare Jewels & Jadeite with one of the finest collections of gemstones from around the world.

The Jewels of the World is a collection of gemstones selected by the auction house for their exceptional quality. The curated collection includes emeralds from Colombo, rubies from Burma and sapphires from Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The collection also features exceptional   coloured gemstones from Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Brazil and Australia.

Bonhams Asia head of jewellery, Graeme Thompson, commented to the media:  “Our focus was to source the finest gemstones and jewels from around the world, to showcase a variety of beautiful and highly desirable jewels for auction. The collection is curated with quality and rarity at the forefront of our minds.”

One of the top lots of the sale is described by Bomhams as “An Important and Rare Pair of Emerald and Diamond Earrings”.

Bonhams adds: “The  step-cut emeralds, weighing 10.91 and 10.26 carats, each within an old brilliant-cut diamond surround, are suspended from a similarly cut diamond surmount, with diamonds approximately 7.40 carats total, length 3.7 cm.”

What makes this pair of earrings particularly precious, is the comparative rarity of getting two emeralds of above 10 cts. The earrings are accompanied by an AGL (American Gemological Laboratories) report stating that the natural emeralds have insignificant indications of traditional clarity enhancement and originate from Colombia.

With an estimated price tag of  US$ 490,000- 620,000 (HK$3.8-4.8 million)  it is perhaps one of the most expensive lots offered at the sale.

Among the other interesting pieces are:  a fine pair of coloured diamond and diamond pendant earrings from Forevermark, a fine sapphire and diamond ring, and an important ruby and diamond bracelet.
