GIA’s iD100 Gem Testing Device Can Now Also Screen Pink Diamonds and Those of Few Other Colours

The Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) newly released software upgrade for its GIA iD100® gem testing device, now gives the instrument the ability to distinguish natural pink diamonds from laboratory-grown (HPHT and CVD) diamonds and diamond simulants.

“The GIA iD100 Pink Diamond Software Upgrade leverages advanced spectroscopic technology, combined with GIA's decades of research into pink diamonds,” the institute explained.

“As the presence of laboratory-grown diamonds increases in the market, it is beneficial to have a robust, research-based, proven gem testing device such as the GIA iD100,” said Anthony Brown, GIA Director of Instruments Operations. “Even though our monthly sales have tripled, we are able to fulfil orders within two business days.”

Along with the upgrade, GIA also released a free update to the existing GIA iD100 software. The free update provides the instrument with the “expanded capability” to screen blue-to-green and brown diamonds. This update needs to be installed before the pink diamond software upgrade can be added, GIA advised.

The institute went on to say that its customer service representatives will contact all GIA iD100 owners to assist with the update; and, if they so choose, they will assist in the purchase of the US$ 249 pink diamond upgrade as well. Both the update and upgrade take less than two minutes each to install.

“These two significant improvements make proper identification of laboratory-grown diamonds more easily accessible to retailers and manufacturers around the world by expanding capabilities of the GIA iD100,” said Tom Moses, GIA Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer. “This is part of our mission to ensure the public trust in gems and jewellery.”

The new software can be purchased on the GIA Store at store.GIA.edu for US$ 249 as a download for current GIA iD100 owners; or it can be pre-installed when ordering a new device.
