Nyurba Mining and Processing Plant Emerges as Most Environmentally Friendly Unit in ALROSA Contest

ALROSA which ran a competition for its internal units and staff, dubbed the Eco-Leader 2019 contest, recently declared the winners.

The contest is “designed to identify the most environmentally friendly structural unit of the company and the most responsible manufacturing company”, ALROSA stated.

“During the year, specialists from the production control group of the environmental centre assessed the level of environmental safety and organised order at production sites,” said Polina Anisimova, Deputy Chief Engineer on environmental issues and work with indigenous and small peoples of the North — Head of the ALROSA Environmental Center. “The activities of the units were analysed from the side of the possible impact on all environmental aspects: air, water, soil and the plant world. In each unit, the condition of industrial sites and documentation were checked according to five criteria: waste and production waste management, protection of atmospheric air, water bodies, soils and vegetation, as well as timely response and elimination of identified violations.”

All ALROSA units located in Aikhal, Udachny, Mirny, Lensk, Ust-Kut, Irkutsk and on the Nakynsk site participated in the competition. 

The Nyurba Mining and Processing Plant emerged as the winner, scoring 4.66 points out of 5 possible, and was named “the most environmentally friendly unit”. 

Other Eco Leaders recognised were the Udachninsky Mining and Processing Plant, the Office of Logistics and Vilyui Exploration Expedition.

“In the personal championship of those responsible for ensuring environmental safety at the enterprise, the first place went to Aleksey Omelchenko, Deputy Chief Engineer for the surface complex of the International mine at Mirny GOK,” the Company added. “The second place was awarded to Anatoly Romanov, Senior Mechanic of the specialised Almaztekhmontazh trust. The third place went to Sergey Krivolutsky, chief engineer of the Ust-Kut branch of the Office of Logistics.”

The winners of the personal competition received certificates of honour and cash bonuses from the ALROSA Environmental Center of 100, 70 and 54 thousand rubles, respectively.
