The Cullinan Mine Gives Up Another Large Diamond - This One is 138.57 Cts

The Cullinan Mine in South Africa, the motherlode of some of the biggest and best diamonds to be produced, has not stopped yielding large stones.

Petra Diamonds Limited has announced the latest such recovery -- a 138.57 carat Type IIa, D colour diamond.

“The diamond will be offered for sale as part of Petra's next sales process in late August in Johannesburg,” Petra announced.

The world’s largest rough diamond – the Cullinan – was from the same mine and at recovery was a hefty 3,106 carats. There have been many more since then. More recently, it was the 24 ct Cullinan Dream -- touted as “the largest Fancy Intense Blue diamond ever to be offered at auction” – that made waves when it was sold for almost US$ 25.4 million. The Cullinan Dream was cut from a rough diamond of 122.52 cts.
