IGJA 2016 - Awarding Excellence

Mar 20, 2017

On March 18, 2017, The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC)  held   a glittering function for  the India Gem & Jewellery Awards (IGJA) 2016.

The Chief Guest at the function was Hon’ble Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis.

Welcoming the CM, Praveenshankar Pandya spoke about the rise in confidence   when he took over the reins of the state. He praised the work done by Shri Fadnavis to further  develop, not just Mumbai, but the entire state.

Pandya   appealed for the CM’s support on three points: to set up a world-class exhibition centre in Mumbai; to set up the first jewellery park in Mumbai; and to set up a university for gems and jewellery. He also requested for the CM’s help for getting  nil duty on raw materials that went into making of jewellery under the soon-to-be-introduced GST regime.

“The gems and jewellery industry is the perfect example of ‘Make in India’,” Pandya said. “And there is great potential for creating an additional 5,00,000 jobs totally; and about 1-1.25 lakh jobs in Maharashtra alone.”

Shri Fadnavis congratulated the award winners and  lauded the development of the gems and jewellery industry.

“This is an industry which earns foreign exchange and contributes to employment generation, and we look upon it as an important industry,” the CM said.

Shri Fadnavis extended his  support on all points raised by Pandya. He also promised to take up the GST matter the GST Council and the Finance Minister.

“We are in the era of ‘Ease of doing Business’ – this is the mantra of the  Central and State government – so you can conduct your business hassle-free,” Shri Fadnavis stressed. “I want all three things you have referred to, to happen in Mumbai. We will work closely with you to ensure this happens.”

Over the years, the IGJA has undergone a transformation to reflect  the development of the industry and the changing business environment.

The 43rd edition of the IGJA included categories – apart from industry performance ones  - like Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, Most Socially Responsible Company, Highest Taxpayer Company, Best E-Commerce Company and Company with Highest Employment on Rolls of Company, Lifetime Achievement Award, amongst others. Categories have also been dissected to accommodate large, medium and small players within the industry, to ensure that the accomplishments of all  are recognised.
