Global platinum jewellery demand is expected to drop by 2% in 2018 to 2,405 koz, but may stage a marginal recovery in 2019 with demand rising by 1% to 2,430 koz, the World Platinum Investment Council has said in its latest World Platinum Quarterly published last week. If the estimated increase happens in 2019, this would make it the first year of growth since 2014, WPIC added.

In a significant move taking its eBayAuthenticate™ services forward, e-tailer eBay announced the expansion of its authenticating service to take in the luxury jewellery category. As a result, holiday shoppers will have access to “more than 45,000 high-end diamond and other gemstone jewellery, verified by professional authenticators”, eBay said.

Media reports emanating from Zimbabwe’s capital Harare say that the country’s Cabinet, at a meeting held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, has approved the Zimbabwe National Diamond Policy. According to this policy, foreign ownership of more than 49% can be allowed in diamond mining companies. However, this permission comes with a caveat – rough stones that are mined within Zimbabwe will have to be submitted “to a beneficiation centre to be operated by the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company”, one report stated. These companies are required to follow certain rules of value addition and beneficiation as well.

The third International Jewelry & Diamond Conference (Guangzhou) 2018, organised on November 27 at Guangzhou, China by the Guangzhou Diamond Exchange (GZDE) and the Guangdong Gems & Jade Exchange (GDGJE) in association with Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) witnessed a large turnout with over 600 delegates. Focused on the theme, “The Dragon and the Diamond, The Glory and the Jewelry”, the conference saw a number of sessions that discussed different facets of the diamond and jewellery industry.
