ALROSA’s Almazy Anabara Recovers 27.85 Carat Pink Diamond

A subsidiary of ALROSA, Almazy Anabara, recently recovered a large pink rough diamond weighing 27.85 carats.

Making the announcement, ALROSA called it a “unique discovery”. Thus far, the largest pink rough diamond recovered by the Company was of almost four carats at a weight of 3.86 carats.  That stone was recovered in 2012; also at Almazy Anabara. Since then, ALROSA has recovered only three other pink diamonds weighing over two carats.

Speaking of its latest recovery ALROSA noted: “If the company decides to cut this stone, it could become the most expensive polished diamond in the history of ALROSA.”

The dimensions of the rough pink diamond are 22.47 x 15.69 x 10.9 mm; the unique stone is of gem-quality and “almost free of inclusions”, ALROSA said.

Generally, ALROSA’s recovery of coloured diamonds are made at the Severalmaz kimberlite pipes or placer deposits of Almazy Anabara.

Due to the extreme rarity of coloured diamonds weighing over 10 carats, they might, at an average, be recovered about once in a year.

"The unique characteristics of the diamond make it an extraordinary, rare stone of high value,” commented Evgeny Agureev, the head of USO ALROSA. “Currently, experts of United Selling Organisation of ALROSA and the company's polishing division Diamonds ALROSA are examining the stone to make the decision: whether to auction it as a rough or cut it into polished diamond. Large stones, especially coloured, are always in demand at auctions. But if the company decides to cut it, it would become the most expensive diamond in the entire history of ALROSA.”
