The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) hosted an E-commerce Export Summit at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, on 11th March, bringing together industry leaders to explore the potential of e-commerce in boosting retail exports. Mr. Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director, GJEPC, delivered a presentation on ‘Enhancing Retail Exports through E-commerce’.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Ray underscored the pivotal role of e-commerce platforms in driving business growth, particularly for the gem and jewellery sector. He described e-commerce as an ideal platform for the industry, citing the low volume and high value of its products as key advantages for cross-border trade. Businesses are bound to grow in the foreseeable future through e-commerce, he stated, emphasising its accessibility and scalability.

Mr. Ray provided an overview of recent foreign trade policy measures introduced by the Government of India. Over the past two years, these regulatory reforms have significantly facilitated e-commerce exports, enabling the sector to achieve remarkable growth. He noted that India’s gem and jewellery exports currently stand at $38 billion, with projections to reach $100 billion by 2047, driven largely by the expanding scope of e-commerce.
