GJEPC Hosts Interaction With Chinese Business Delegation

A business delegation from China met with representatives of The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) in order to get an insight into the gems and jewellery industry of India.

Nine delegates from China, accompanied by the Managing Director, India, of the International Gemological Institute (IGI) visited the Council’s head office in Mumbai.

The members of the Chinese delegates included:

  • Mei Hong Jian – CEO of Yuyuan Inc.
  • Huang Zhen- Executive President of Yuyuan Inc.;  Chairman of Yuyuan Jewelry & Fashion Group;  and Director of IGI
  • Mao Xiang Hua – Vice President of Forte Group
  • Ding Sheng Li – Head of Procurement of Yuyuan Jewelry & Fashion Group
  • Ms. Wang Lu – General Manager of Strategic Investment Department of Yuyuan Jewelry & Fashion Group; and Director IGI
  • Mr. Zhou – Chairman of Shenzen Baoyi jewellery Co. Ltd.
  • Mr. Lin – Chairman of Shenzhen Xingguanda Jewellery Co. Ltd.
  • Hong Liang – Manager of Exchanging at the Shanghai Diamond Exchange
  • Ms. Ye Yi – Staff of Strategic Investment Department of Yuyuan Jewelry & Fashion Group

Representatives of the GJEPC who met with them included: Sanjay Shah - Convenor Diamond Panel Committee (DPC); Manish Jivani – Co-Convener, DPC & Convener MSME; Sanjay Kothari – Past  Chairman, GJEPC  and Chairman, Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI); Ashish Mehta – Past Convener,  Natural Diamond Monitoring Committee (NDMC); and Sabyasachi Ray – Executive Director (ED), GJEPC.

The Chinese delegation were shown  a film on the Indian g& j industry titled ‘India Gives Life to Diamonds’ produced by the GJEPC. Discussions ensued thereafter.

Sanjay Shah gave an overview of the diamond industry and pointed out that that there is a decrease in exports of cut & polished diamonds to China; and enquired about the reason for the same.  Also, he asked the delegation whether they are aware of any export of lab-grown diamonds from China to India. 

 In response, the Indian representatives were told that the members of the delegation have no information on the same, as  exports are mainly going out from Hong Kong, since there is no duty for exporting to Hong Kong from China.

The interaction continued, enabling the Chinese delegation to get a good idea on the nature of the Indian gems and jewellery industry.
