Mixed Response at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Auction in Geneva

A spectacular pair of D colour Flawless Pear shaped diamond earrings, each abobve 50 carats was reported to have sold for US$ 17.6 million, lower than the estimated price of between US$ 20-30 million at the Geneva Magnificent Jewels auction held by Christie’s yesterday. Total sales at the auction were US$ 97 million according to media reports, which was within the expected figure of US$ 80-100 million, that the auction house had said the sale would yield.

Media reports quoted Christie’s jewellery head Rahul Kadakia as saying that they were happy with the results, adding that though a few lots particularly in the bigger sizes did not move as per expectations, the coloured stones segment did very well.

The earring set was a creation of atelier Boehmer et Bassenge through its new boutique Maison de Haute Joaillerie in Paris. Dubbed the "Miroir de l'Amour" (Mirror of Love), they comprised two D Colour flawless clarity diamonds with perfect polish and symmetry weighing 52.55 and 50.47 carats, and were said to be the largest earring pair of its kind ever.

However, a 9.14-carat, pear-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond ring sold for US$ 18.2 million roughly on par with estimates.

A Van Cleef and Arpels ruby and diamond bracelet wwas bought for US$ 1.31 million, almost double the pre-sale estimate.
