The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour visited Training Centres of GJSCI in Surat last week to better understand the curriculum and the skilling processes under PMKVY that have been developed by the Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) for the industry.

They visited the SRKID centre, the knowledge & training division of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, headed by Shri Govind Dholakia (Chairman - SRK Group) and the centre at Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) headed by Shri Samir Joshi (Head of Institute).

At each centre, the visitors interacted with the students and motivated them. This was followed by a discussion on how skill development can help in uplifting the industry.

The committee comprising 20 MPs was led by chairperson Shri Kirit Somaiya, MP. Other prominent individuals present on the occasion included Shri Rajesh Agarwal (Jt. Secy – MSDE), Shri Jayant Krishna (COO – NSDC), Shri Gaurav Kapoor (Head- Industry Partnership &CSR; SSC Engagement-NSDC), Shri Rajesh Agarwal (NSDC) and Shri Binit Bhatt, CEO, GJSCI. The committee expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the GJSCI towards reforming the gems & Jewellery Industry.

Binit Bhatt said, “We were delighted to have the esteemed Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour as our guests at training centers of GJSCI in Surat. The committee saw the process of our training and were impressed.”

During the last week, the GJSCI also flagged off its Tihar Inmates Skilling Project with the commencement of a course in hand-sketch designing for a pilot batch of 30 women inmates.

Shri Sudhir Yadav, Director General-Delhi Prisons was the chief guest and inaugurated the course, while other prominent persons present on the occasion included Shri Ajay Verma, Chairman- IBJ India, Shri Gaurav Kapoor, Head- Industry Partnership & CSR; SSC Engagement-NSDC, Dr. Rajendra Bhola, Director-GJSCI and Shri Binit Bhatt.

The project aims at empowering the women inmates of the Jjand helping them reform into responsible citizens while attaining some financial independence.
