VBJ: Solitaire’s Steady Reign in Indian Households

jewellery magazine

Our guest writer, Managing Partner, Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers, believes that diamonds are a swiftly growing category in India, and we are emerging as a large market for diamond jewellery in the world.

India is on a growth path, and without delving into statistics, it is evident that the purchasing power of Indians has increased. A significant percentage of people have shifted from their routine gold-buying habit to exploring other categories, including diamonds. The allure of diamonds cuts across all ages and genders, especially  when it comes to solitaires. Secretly or openly, everyone desires to possess a solitaire diamond.

The love and demand for diamonds are apparent across the country, with the majority valuing diamond quality over size, as they are treasured as family heirlooms. People equate single gemstone (solitaire) adornments with status and peace,  just like they did in ancient civilisations. Solitaires have been cherished for many years, gaining prominence in the Victorian era as symbols of love and commitment. Loved for their timeless elegance and simplicity, solitaires have become a favourite among jewellery enthusiasts.

Despite their simple design – a sparkling gem set in a band of precious metal – solitaires continue to captivate people across generations. They hold an undisputed position in wedding ceremonies and continue to reign as the symbol of eternal love.

Trends

Young buyers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are becoming a larger segment of the market, and they prefer personalised jewellery, a trend which is on the rise. They like the way the solitaire diamonds are set, and create unique pieces that reflect their personal style.

While large stones are a popular choice now, there is an equal demand for well-balanced carat weights across various ranges. Consumers opt for diamonds with minimal inclusions and insist that it appears clear to the naked eye. The demand for sustainable and ethically sourced diamonds is also rising, with consumers paying more attention to the 4Cs – cut, clarity, colour, and carat.

Women are the primary buyers of solitaire diamonds, which remains the top choice for engagement rings and wedding rings. Many also purchase this timeless jewellery piece as a preferred addition to their collection.

The Indian diamond market

The Indian diamond market has enormous potential, and I think it could grow by 150% to $18 billion by the early next decade. India is certainly a bright spot for the larger industry, with fundamental sales increasing each year. While gold jewellery still represents the bulk of sales in India, diamonds contribute an estimated 10-15% of the total value sold.

Undoubtedly, diamonds are a rapidly growing category in India, positioning the country as a major market for diamond jewellery on the global stage.

As more people seek the timeless sophistication of solitaire jewellery, manufacturers will respond by creating products that showcase exceptional craftsmanship and superior quality.

Buying a Solitaire?

While buying solitaire diamonds, customers should look for exceptional brilliance and sparkle. The solitaire should be set in a way that enhances its natural beauty. The jewel should not only be a statement of your style but also exhibit mind-blowing artistry. Ideally, the solitaire should seamlessly blend classic and contemporary styles. Moreover, opt for a brand with a solid reputation, ensuring that each diamond sourced meets the highest standards.

At VBJ, we have an in-house lapidary artist who ensures fine cuts and clarity of high value diamonds.  We are one of the leading retailers of certified, high-quality solitaire diamonds online.
