Inside Mirari’s Modern Design Dialogue

Mira Gulati, Founder and Head Designer of Mirari, the contemporary fine jewellery brand, reflects on heritage and innovation, and on shaping modern heirlooms for a discerning global audience.

Mirari is a Delhi-based contemporary fine jewellery house where fine craftsmanship meets modern expression. Each piece is a handcrafted work of art—infused with rare diamonds, coloured gemstones, and a narrative sensibility that bridges heritage and global luxury. From Art Deco-inspired works to reimagined traditional forms, Mirari champions elegance with intention, offering both bespoke experiences and collectible pieces for connoisseurs across India and the world.

Mira Gulati

Mira, you established Mirari at a time when India was just opening up to contemporary luxury. What unmet need in the market were you responding to when you founded the brand?

When Mirari was founded, India was at the cusp of embracing contemporary luxury, yet there was a clear whitespace in the fine jewellery landscape. Consumers were seeking designs that went beyond conventional motifs; pieces that felt modern, refined, and globally relevant, without losing the soul of traditional craftsmanship. I recognised this unmet need early on.

Mirari emerged from a desire to bridge this gap by bringing together India’s rich artisanal heritage with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.

Your global training and early experience in California shaped both your design and business thinking. Which of those learnings have proved most critical in building Mirari’s success in India?

My time in California was truly formative in shaping both my design sensibilities and my approach to building a luxury brand. My education at the Gemological Institute of America immersed me in the world of diamonds and gemstones and strengthened my foundation in design, quality, and craftsmanship, elements that continue to define Mirari’s aesthetic today.

Equally important was my MBA from Babson College, which gave me a deep understanding of entrepreneurship, brand building, and the operational nuances of running a high-end business. Being exposed to global markets and international clients also taught me what truly resonates in luxury: attention to detail, authenticity, and storytelling.

These learnings have been instrumental in shaping Mirari in India, allowing me to build a brand that feels both timeless and relevant for today’s discerning clientele.

Mirari blends modern aesthetics with traditional Indian craftsmanship. How do you maintain this balance?

We continuously push the boundaries of innovation by fusing global inspirations with India’s rich heritage, reimagining classic elements for today’s confident wearer.

Over the years, we’ve reinterpreted several traditional forms in a way that feels relevant and modern. For instance, we have transformed the aarsi ring, once worn by Indian royalty, into a contemporary statement piece. We’ve taken the traditional silhouette of the raani haar and evolved it into sleek, modern necklaces that appeal to today’s aesthetic. We’ve even reimagined the kalgi, giving it an Art Deco twist, and our Empire State necklaces draw inspiration from the classic dholna necklaces of the East, blending cultural heritage with architectural cues from global cityscapes.

Every design begins with a clear intention to bring authenticity and tradition to people through jewellery that elevates them and makes them feel like the best version of themselves. That sense of confidence and joy is what inspires us to keep innovating.

What, in your view, defines the unmistakable “Mirari signature” that sets your pieces apart?

Our signature lies in the distinctive storylines that shape our designs. We are known for our mastery with coloured stones and natural hand-carved gems, which add an unmistakable edge to every creation. The Empire State Collection has become a defining symbol of our design sensibility, admired and embraced by clients in India and across the world. Our universal approach to design will continue to lead the way, inspiring and shaping the collections to come.

What elements make up the “Mirari experience” for your clientele?

The Mirari experience is about creating value far beyond the jewellery itself. Today, we offer an unparalleled journey at our design studio; connoisseurs of fine jewellery can book a private appointment and visit our experience centre, where they can witness firsthand how each piece is conceived and crafted with intention.

Every creation begins in our design studio, where unique storylines and exceptional concepts come to life. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility then transforms these visions into reality, blending heritage-inspired craftsmanship with innovative techniques.

By curating each client’s journey—from understanding their vision to bringing it to life—we deliver a highly personalised and truly memorable luxury experience. From wedding trousseaus to travel-inspired pieces and heritage-modern fusions, we ensure every client enjoys bespoke service and creations that celebrate the richness of Indian craftsmanship.

You cater to both Indian and global audiences. How do the preferences, expectations, and buying behaviours differ between these markets?

In India, jewellery purchases are often heritage-driven and investment-focused, tied to weddings, festivals, and family traditions. Globally, clients seek unique, versatile, and contemporary designs that reflect personal style. At Mirari, we bridge these worlds by reimagining traditional craftsmanship through a modern lens, creating pieces that are authentic, aspirational, and resonate with both Indian and international audiences.

How is Mirari adapting to these global standards of transparency and ethical sourcing?

At Mirari, we view transparency, ethical sourcing, and sustainability not just as standards, but as a responsibility and a competitive edge. By partnering with certified suppliers for conflict-free diamonds, pearls, and gems and ensuring full traceability from global mines to handcrafted pieces, we deliver both trust and value to our clients. We will soon be a certified member of the RJC, which means that the gold we use is either fairmined, or CoC gold or recycled from past owners.

Every collection is designed with provenance in mind, and through bespoke consultations, clients can understand the story behind each gem. For us, ethical practices fuel innovation, build lasting relationships, and position Mirari as a brand that combines craftsmanship, luxury, and conscience.

How do you ensure growth without compromising artisanal integrity or creative authenticity?

It’s all about creating systems that support our artisans, investing in their skills, and maintaining quality without stifling creativity.

Teamwork plays a major role with every designer, artisan, and strategist contributing to ensuring that each piece reflects our heritage-inspired philosophy and signature craftsmanship, even as we explore new markets. For us, growth isn’t just about numbers, it’s about empowering artisans, creating strong, trust-driven relationships with our clients, and pushing the boundaries of design while staying authentic to our vision.

With celebrity visibility boosting brand recognition, how do you maintain exclusivity and personalisation for loyal clients?

Maintaining exclusivity and personalisation is central to our brand ethos. Personalisation thrives through bespoke consultations for custom wedding trousseaus, travel-inspired pieces, or one-off creations, while high-value clients enjoy VIP services like provenance storytelling and priority access to artisan collaborations—experiences even celebrities rarely receive.

This tiered approach allows us to balance scarcity for broader appeal with intimacy for core collectors, ensuring every client feels valued.

By combining strategic visibility with deep, meaningful connections, we preserve our prestige, reward loyalty, and continue pushing creative boundaries without compromising the bespoke experience that defines Mirari.

What key trends do you believe will shape the future of Indian luxury jewellery—and where do you envision Mirari in that landscape?

The future of Indian luxury jewellery is being shaped by sustainability, innovation, and bold design experimentation. Key trends include ethical sourcing, modern minimalism, versatile pieces with multiple functionalities. We always try and make pieces that can transition from one look to another and be worn in multiple ways.

We see this as an opportunity to lead the evolution of fine jewellery, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics and sustainable practices. Our vision is to create pieces that are not just beautiful, but meaningful, empowering, and globally relevant, while continuing to push creative boundaries, set new standards for quality, and deliver memorable experiences to our clientele. In this landscape, Mirari aims to be the brand that bridges heritage and modernity, tradition and innovation, India and the world.
