Established in 1966, the GJEPC has over the years effectively moulded the scattered efforts of individual exporters to make the gem and jewellery sector a powerful engine driving India’s exportled growth. With more than 7,000 members spread all over the country, the council is primarily involved in introducing the Indian gem and jewellery products to the international market and leverage their international relationships to promote exports. To achieve this, the council provides market information to its members regarding foreign trade enquiries, trade and tariff regulations, rates of import duties, and information about jewellery fairs and exhibitions. This apex body is continuously working towards creating and retaining a pool of artisans and designers who are trained as per international standards so as to consolidate the Indian gems and jewellery industry and establish it as a prominent global player in the segment.

Trade Facilitator

  • GJEPC is the voice of the gem and jewellery industry by representing issues to the government and recommending policy interventions impacting trade at state and central levels.
  • Plays key role in shaping the Exim policy of India.

Business Promotion

  • Represents India at key international trade fairs.
  • Organizes buyer-seller meets for diamonds, jewellery, coloured gemstones and silver in India, and key target markets.
  • Invites trade delegations to explore business cooperation.
  • Special Notified Zone in BDB, Mumbai facilitates buyers to showcase rough diamonds directly to manufacturers.

  • Propagates the 17 sustainable development goals of United Nations amongst trade, and has been working towards integrating them with organization’s objectives.

Good Health & Well-being

Swasthya Ratna: The Swasthya Ratna Group Mediclaim scheme launched in 2015 provides subsidized health insurance to employees of GJEPC member companies. The scheme has covered over 6.5 lakh lives and disbursed over `150 crore till date.

Parichay Card: GJEPC’s Parichay Card aims at creating an identity to workers engaged in gem and jewellery sector. This card provides the workers a valid proof of their employment and identity and make them eligible for various schemes, benefits and initiatives.

Infrastructure Development

Common Facility Centre

  • GJEPC has set up common facility centres (CFCs) in Amreli, Visnagar, Palanpur and Junagadh in Gujarat.
  • A common pool of high-end and capitalintensive state-of-the-art equipment made available at reasonable costs.
  • Services include planning, laser sawing and cutting facilities to process diamonds. Access to CAD, CAM, RPT and casting facilities help derive design output through modern technology.
  • CFCs have improved quality, productivity and yield of the finished products, leading to capacity building, growth in exports and increased contribution to India’s GDP.

Jewellery Park, Mumbai

  • GJEPC is setting up the first jewellery park in Mumbai. The objective is to facilitate India’s labour-intensive industry with infrastructure, state-of-the-art machines, and all other allied services under one roof.
  • Reduce gold loss ratio from 10 per cent to less than 3 per cent, saving 40 tonnes of gold annually.
  • Single window clearance for all government rules and regulations.
  • Generate direct employment for 1,00,000 workers.

Gem Bourse, Jaipur

  • GJEPC in association with Jewellers Association, Jaipur is setting up Gem Bourse at Jaipur.
  • An estimated 2,000 offices of coloured gemstone manufacturers and traders along with customs, banks, and other service providers will come under one roof.
  • One-stop shop for all gemstone needs for buyers.

Self-Regulation

The industry is strengthening its selfregulation measures:

  • My KYC Bank commissioned by council provides greater transparency in the business.
  • Paves way for connected and secured business with adequate provisions of monitoring by government and financial institutions.
  • My KYC Bank provides a centralized global platform for companies in the gems and jewellery industry (including gold, diamond, precious stones and jewellery) to complete, manage and share their KYC information enabling them to meet their obligations under the anti-money laundering (AML) laws of their respective countries.

Nodal Agency for Kimberley Process

  • GJEPC has been mandated by the Government of India as the nodal agency for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).
  • The Council plays a key role in maintaining the data and paperwork of the flow of all diamonds certified as ‘conflictfree’ going in and out of the country.

Education & Research

Imparting Skills, Empowering Industry

Skill development, training, research and gemological services have been the top priorities for GJEPC since its inception. Today, there are seven educational institutes across five cities, and four gemological laboratories under the GJEPC umbrella.

Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery

Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery in Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi, Varanasi and Udupi along with the Indian Diamond Institute in Surat, have trained 55,000 students till date.

Gemological Institute of India (GII), Mumbai

Gemmological Institute of India (GII) is an established and acknowledged centre for gemological and training services and for its research and development work. It is an authority on gemstones and diamonds in the country with a highly trained and competent faculty, who have regularly produced research papers on gemstones.

Gem Testing Laboratory, Jaipur

Jaipur, the leading coloured gemstone centre of the country has its own laboratory known as Gem Testing laboratory (GTL). While it grades and certifies all kinds of stones, its speciality is in coloured gemstones.

Indian Gemological Institute, Delhi

Located in New Delhi, Indian Gemological Institute (IGI) serves the gem testing and certification requirements of the industry in North India.

IIJS PREMIERE

Each year the global gem and jewellery industry converges at India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) – Asia’s second largest jewellery trade fair hosted by GJEPC.

Design Inspirations

GJEPC organizes Design Inspirations seminar in Mumbai along the lines of Signature IIJS in February each year.

  • Design Inspirations is an initiative to educate jewellers, designers and students about the upcoming trends in the gems and jewellery sector in India, Europe and the US.
  • It gives in-depth insights into consumer behaviour patterns, aspirations, desires, emotions, feelings, and how to translate them into thematic concepts and visual directions.
