AI Gains Ground in Jewellery Design

At the NESCO Symposium held on 11 January 2026, Devyani Parekh, Jewellery Professional at GIA, delivered a detailed session on AI & Design Congruence, examining how artificial intelligence is influencing jewellery design, manufacturing workflows and digital outreach.

Drawing on her experience across manufacturing, retail collaboration and education, Parekh offered an end-to-end view of how design intent can align with execution through technology. She explained the distinction between traditional AI, long used for data analysis, and Generative AI, which creates new content such as images, text and videos. This capability, she noted, is especially relevant to creative industries, provided the data and prompts guiding AI are robust.

The session outlined growing use cases for AI in jewellery, including text-to-image concept development, sketch-to-render visualisation, assistance with technical drawings, early-stage 3D mesh generation and preliminary cost sheets. Parekh stressed that while these tools can shorten timelines and improve client communication, expert validation remains essential at every stage.

She also addressed regulatory and sustainability concerns, pointing out that India currently lacks specific AI regulations, while global discussions are increasingly focused on copyright, human authorship and energy consumption linked to AI usage.

In digital marketing, Parekh demonstrated how AI-generated renders and lifestyle visuals are helping brands and new entrants strengthen their online presence with lower investment. However, she cautioned against blind reliance on AI, citing errors in design interpretation, stone counts and product categorisation.

The session concluded with a clear takeaway: AI works best as a design partner. Its real value lies in supporting human judgement, creativity and accountability, not replacing them, as the jewellery industry adapts to a technology-driven future.
