Burgundy Suspends Point Lake Mining at Ekati, Cuts Jobs Amid Market Slump

Burgundy Diamond Mines has temporarily halted open-pit mining at the Point Lake site within the Ekati Diamond Mine, citing weak rough diamond prices. The move has led to job cuts and a reduction in contractors on site.

Despite recovering 67,700 carats from a May 2025 bulk sample, Burgundy deemed the operation uneconomical in the current market. The company will maintain Point Lake for a potential restart when conditions improve.

Underground mining at Ekati’s Misery site remains unaffected, with increased efficiencies shaping a revised, more sustainable operating model.

An updated mine plan and a pre-feasibility study for the high-value Fox underground deposit are expected by the end of July.
