CIBJO Congress Special Report Highlights Data Analysis’ Impact on Jewellery Industry

As the countdown to the 2024 CIBJO Congress in Shanghai draws near, the tenth and final pre-Congress Special Report has been released. The report, prepared by the CIBJO Technology Committee, delves into the transformative role of data analysis in reshaping the jewellery industry.

Led by Stéphane Fischler, the Committee explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionise the industry’s operations. While acknowledging the challenges and hype surrounding new technologies, Fischler emphasises the positive impact they have already made on production and management systems.

Unlike other CIBJO committees focused on standards and nomenclature, the Technology Committee serves as a think tank, examining the potential implications of emerging technologies on the jewellery industry. Its members, including Thomas Baillod, David Block, Mahiar Borhanjoo, Elle Hill, Daniel Nyfeler, and Emmanuel Piat, contribute to this exploratory effort.

Historically, jewellery industry technology advancements centred on automated systems to improve efficiency in mining, rough processing, and manufacturing. However, today’s focus has shifted towards the downstream distribution chain.

Fischler highlights the dramatic transformation in understanding the marketplace and tailoring products to meet consumer needs. Digital data collection, analysis, and delivery systems have empowered a more targeted and effective approach compared to traditional hit-and-miss methods.

The Committee anticipates further advancements in AI and machine learning to optimize operations. However, it underscores the importance of careful implementation and nurturing human resources to maximise the benefits of these technologies. Finding the necessary expertise to manage these technologies is a growing challenge.
