India Post has announced a temporary suspension of all postal services to the United States, except for letters, documents, and gift items valued up to USD 100, effective 25 August 2025.
The decision follows US Executive Order No. 14324, which withdraws the duty-free de minimis exemption for goods up to USD 800 from 29 August 2025. Under the new regime, all postal consignments to the USA, regardless of value, will attract customs duties as per the International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) framework.
Transport carriers, citing lack of clarity on procedures for duty collection and designation of “qualified parties,” have expressed their inability to accept US-bound postal consignments after 25 August. Consequently, the Department of Posts has temporarily halted booking of parcels and merchandise to the USA until further notice.
Customers who have already dispatched articles that cannot be forwarded under the new rules may apply for a refund of postage. The Department assured that it is working closely with stakeholders and monitoring developments to restore full services at the earliest.
