The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has announced the launch of its new Laboratory Grown Materials Standard (LGMS). The new standard sets clear guidelines for lab-grown diamonds and coloured gemstones, reinforcing responsible business practices in alignment with the RJC’s 2024 Code of Practices (COP).
Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones, including rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, have been part of the jewellery sector for years. With their growing market presence, the RJC recognised the need for a dedicated framework that ensures integrity and sustainability across the supply chain. The LGMS applies to all RJC members handling lab-grown materials and introduces stringent requirements for legal compliance, intellectual property, waste management, and product transparency.
For the first year, compliance with LGMS will be voluntary for existing RJC members. After this initial phase, it will become mandatory for all members handling lab-grown materials. To facilitate a smooth transition, RJC will offer training modules and streamlined auditing processes for businesses managing both lab-grown and natural materials.
