World Gold Council Unveils Report on the Future of Digital Gold

The World Gold Council (WGC) has launched a landmark report, A New Golden Age: Imagining the Future of Digital Gold, which explores how digitalisation could transform gold’s role in the global economy. Produced in partnership with The Future Laboratory, the report invites readers to consider “What if?” – examining innovative possibilities for gold in a rapidly digitalising world.

Rather than predicting the future, the WGC aims to spark dialogue among innovators, financial experts, and technology leaders on how gold might evolve in form, function, and utility. The study outlines three potential frontiers: Pervasive Digital Gold, which envisions instant, transparent gold transactions; DeFi Gold Rush, where tokenised gold could generate yields through decentralised finance; and The Next Gold Frontier, exploring cultural and virtual applications such as “phygital” gold NFTs.

WGC CEO David Tait said the report builds on the organisation’s Gold247 programme, designed to strengthen trust and transparency through initiatives like the Gold Bar Integrity database and the patent-pending Standard Gold Unit (SGU) — a universal digital exchange standard for gold.
