The Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) announced the passing of Professor Henry A. Hänni, former Director of SSEF, who died peacefully at his home in Basel on 9th January, 2025, at the age of 80.

Professor Hänni, a renowned gemmologist and educator, dedicated his life to advancing the field. He began his career at the University of Basel, where he earned his PhD in 1980 with a focus on beryl from the Swiss Alps. In 1990, he assumed the role of Director at SSEF, leading the institute to international prominence through his groundbreaking research in pearl and coloured stone analysis.

During his tenure at SSEF, Professor Hänni also served as a Professor of Gemmology at the University of Basel, inspiring countless students and professionals worldwide. He played a key role in the development of the CIBJO Blue Book series, particularly the work of the CIBJO Pearl Commission.

Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO, said, “Henry was a scientist who dedicated his life to researching, understanding and documenting precious minerals and other gem materials, with the primary objective of growing our knowledge base and then teaching to others what he had learned. He was a pure academic in the service of our industry, and a teacher, mentor and role model to generation of gemmologists who came after him. His legacy will live on in his students and writings, which will continue to serve us for many years to come.”

Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki, Director of SSEF, added, “Professor Hänni will be remembered not only for his extraordinary academic achievements but for his unique sense of curiosity. His warm personality and distinctive sense of humour touched all who knew him.”

They said Professor Hänni’s contributions to gemmology will continue to influence and inspire future generations of researchers and professionals.
