Mani Jewel: Blending Tradition with Modern Leadership

Dhyey Sojitra, entrepreneur of Luxury, Mani Jewel, and recipient of GJEPC’s ‘40 under 40’ award, shares how he balances his views on leadership and the legacy of a family business.

GJEPC’s ‘40 Under 40 initiative’ celebrates the Indian jewellery industry’s next-generation talent. The prestigious award recognises young visionaries who demonstrate exceptional talent, innovation, and dedication to the world of jewellery.

Dhyey Sojitra, entrepreneur of Luxury at Surat-based Mani Jewel, explains the nuances of his craft.

How has Mani Jewel maintained its legacy for over two decades? What are the core values that have been essential in maintaining this legacy?

I grew up in a family deeply rooted in the diamond industry, and saw the brilliance and allure of diamonds firsthand. My grandfather, Mathurbhai Sojitra, established this legacy with dedication, which my father and uncles continued, embracing principles of accountability, confidence, and integrity. These values guide us in maintaining transparent business practices, fostering creativity, and always putting our customers first, which has helped us build trust and confidence over the years.

Our company has upheld its legacy through adherence to our core values: care, commitment, creativity, customer-centricity, and continuous improvement.

What leadership practices do you believe have been crucial for longevity in this business?

From observing my grandfather’s dedication, to my father’s balanced approach, and my uncle’s innovative ideas, I have learned the importance of understanding and integrating diverse perspectives. Leadership in our business involves a fine balance of respecting tradition and embracing innovation.

Leading with empathy and maintaining open communication are crucial practices that ensure our team is motivated and aligned with our vision, while also adapting to modern challenges and opportunities.

Which leadership practices have helped you in building a successful brand like Mani Jewels?

My approach to leadership is deeply influenced by the lessons learned from my family’s legacy.

I prioritise providing an environment where team members feel valued and empowered to be creative. This involves a commitment to continuous improvement and customer-centricity, ensuring that we not only meet but exceed expectations.

Additionally, integrating modern technologies with traditional craftsmanship has allowed us to offer unique and high-quality jewellery while staying ahead of industry trends.

As a younger leader in the business, what modern approaches are you implementing to prepare the company for future challenges?

Embracing technology is key to preparing for future challenges. At Mani Jewel, we use advanced tools like 3D modelling to enhance customisation and precision.

My personal experience, including a transformative 45-day journey in Visakhapatnam, has taught me resilience and adaptability. I apply these lessons by staying open to new ideas and integrating innovative practices while maintaining the core values that have been the cornerstone of our success.

How do you embrace modern technologies while maintaining the integrity of traditional craftsmanship in your operations?

New technologies are integrated into our operations to complement and enhance traditional craftsmanship.

For instance, while we use CAD and 3D printing for precision, our skilled artisans ensure that each piece reflects the timeless quality and artistry that define our brand. This blend of innovation and tradition ensures that our jewellery remains both cutting-edge and classic.

We blend classic craftsmanship with modern innovations by offering a range of customizable options that respect traditional design principles while incorporating the latest technology.

Our extensive collection of over 100,000 designs allows customers to personalise every detail, ensuring that while we innovate, we remain true to the timeless elegance that our brand is known for.

How do you see the role of jewellery designers evolving with the advent of new technologies? Do these advancements diminish the need for their skills or enhance their creative potential?

The role of jewellery designers is greatly enhanced by modern technologies. Advances in design tools provide designers with more freedom to explore complex and innovative ideas. This technology does not diminish their skills but rather amplifies their creative potential, allowing them to focus on artistry and craftsmanship while technology handles precision and efficiency.

What initiatives are you taking to engage with the next generation of customers and employees?

Engaging with the next generation involves leveraging digital platforms and social media to connect with younger customers.

For employees, we emphasise career development and hands-on learning, inspired by my own experiences starting from a young age.

Our approach includes mentorship programs and opportunities for creative expression, ensuring that we cultivate talent to align with the evolving market trends.

Can you share any memorable interactions with customers that left a lasting impact?

One memorable interaction involved a custom bridal set for a customer with a specific vision. Collaborating closely with her to bring her dream design to life was deeply rewarding.

The emotional response upon seeing the finished pieces reinforced the significance of our work and reminded me of the impact our jewellery has on people’s lives.

Managing a family business can involve complex dynamics. How do you approach resolving differences in opinion within the family?

Resolving differences within a family business requires an open mindset and a shared vision.

My approach is to ensure that all perspectives are considered and that decisions are made with the long-term success of the business in mind.

Respecting each family member’s expertise and maintaining a focus on our core values helps us navigate and resolve differences constructively.

What advice would you give to the next generation of leaders in family business?

Being a third-generation learner, leader, and entrepreneur, I would advise the next generation to balance respect for tradition with an openness to innovation, and always stay grounded.

Embrace change while staying true to the values which intrinsically built the business.

Building strong relationships and maintaining a holistic approach are key to leading successfully, and continuing a legacy.
