Outreach Program Empowers Assamese Jewellers

GJEPC’s Kolkata Regional Office, in collaboration with the North East Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (NEHHDC) Assam, successfully conducted an outreach program in Ranthali, Nagaon, Assam. The event aimed to support and empower local Assamese traditional jewellery manufacturers by addressing their specific needs and providing opportunities for growth.

The program, held on 24th September, brought together key stakeholders including Shri Sankha Prabal Shandilya, DPM, Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM); Dr. Sriparna B. Baruah, Advisor, NEHHDC; Shri Kaushik Ghosh, Regional Director, GJEPC Eastern Region; as well as officials from NEHHDC and Pakhimuria Block Office, Ranthali Nagaon, Assam.

During the event, Shri Kaushik Ghosh highlighted the importance of training under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme for artisans. He noted the need for artisans to upgrade their skills to gain recognition and better opportunities. He encouraged participants to actively participate in such training programs and take advantage of the various MSME schemes, membership services, benefits, and Parichay Cards offered by the GJEPC.

Ranthali village, known for its exquisite Assamese jewellery, was the focus of the outreach program. Approximately 90% of the families in the village are engaged in this traditional craft, making it an important hub for Assamese jewellery manufacturing. The intricate designs, often featuring floral and fauna motifs, are primarily handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Ranthali.

The outreach program provided a valuable platform for Assamese traditional jewellery manufacturers to connect with experts, learn about new opportunities, and address their challenges. By supporting these artisans, the GJEPC and NEHHDC are contributing to the preservation and promotion of Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
