Rio Tinto said its diamond operation at the Diavik mine in Canada faced challenges in 2024. The company maintained its commitment to responsible sourcing and operational efficiency despite market headwinds.
For the year ended 31st December 2024, the diamond segment generated revenue of $279 million, down 37% year on year, and reported a loss of $127 million compared to underlying earnings of $26 million in the previous year.
Tragically, the year also saw a significant loss at the Diavik mine, where team members were among the victims of a plane crash in January.
