Beyond the Ordinary: Sumit Kamalia’s Innovative Jewellery

SUMIT KAMALIA, founder and director of Uma Ornaments, has made it his mission to balance luxury and accessibility in the world of fine diamond jewellery. Through a blend of innovative design and quality craftsmanship, his company creates high-impact pieces that are as beautiful as they are wearable.

As the owner of Uma Ornaments, what led you to join the jewellery industry? When did you establish the company?

Jewellery has always fascinated me, not just for its beauty but also for its ability to tell stories and leave an impact. I established Uma Ornaments with a vision to bring luxury and sophistication to a broader audience by creating high-impact jewellery that is high on design quotient yet accessible. Since then, our focus has been on combining quality craftsmanship with a keen understanding of market trends, delivering pieces that resonate with our clients’ needs and aspirations.

Your company balances luxury with commercial appeal. How do you approach the challenge of creating high-impact, designer pieces that are also accessible and saleable?

Balancing luxury with marketability is a core focus at Uma Ornaments. We take pride in creating jewellery that stands out in design while being wearable and versatile. By closely analysing market demands and staying tuned to client preferences, we ensure that every collection has both the visual impact of a designer piece – and the functionality clients need. This approach allows us to maintain exclusivity in our designs while offering pieces that our clients find practical and appealing.

Innovation is key to Uma Ornaments’ success. Can you share some insights into the processes and strategies you follow to continually innovate and stay ahead of the curve in the diamond jewellery industry?

Innovation at Uma Ornaments starts with an analytical approach. Each month, we conduct a detailed analysis of market trends, allowing us to understand what’s resonating globally and domestically. Our team then brings these insights into the design process, experimenting with new materials, gemstone combinations, and aesthetic concepts. This focus on regular, data-driven innovation ensures that we introduce collections that are fresh, unique, and relevant, keeping us a step ahead in the diamond jewellery industry.

Which are the strong regions domestically, and which are your top export markets?

Domestically, we have a strong presence not only in metropolitan regions but also in smaller towns and tier 2 cities. The demand for our designs extends across both urban and emerging markets, as clients from all areas increasingly seek high-quality, versatile jewellery that balances elegance with functionality.

Internationally, our top export markets include the Middle East, where our luxurious yet accessible designs resonate with a broad audience those values both beauty and quality.

Any impact of record-high gold prices on buying jewellery?

Record-high gold prices certainly influence the buying patterns, but we find that clients are now more inclined to invest in jewellery that offers both aesthetic appeal and long-term value. Clients are opting for high-impact pieces that feel like a wise investment while also reflecting their personal style, which has positively impacted our sales.

Your jewels are diamond-centric … What are your views about the outlook of natural diamonds.

Natural diamonds have a timeless appeal, and their demand remains strong. I believe that people value the heritage and authenticity that natural diamonds offer, seeing them as a lasting symbol of beauty and value. At Uma Ornaments, we continue to focus on diamond jewellery because we know it’s what our clients cherish, and I’m optimistic about the future of natural diamonds.

What are the current market trends domestically and internationally? What are the consumer preferences and price points that are popular?

In India, we’re seeing a preference for jewellery that combines traditional aesthetics with a contemporary feel, making pieces versatile for daily wear and occasions. Internationally, the trend is towards bold, statement pieces that reflect individual style. Consumers are drawn to jewellery that balances quality and design, with a strong demand in mid-range price points for value-driven, standout pieces.
