Christie’s will be presenting Exceptional Jewels & Objects of Elegance: A Connoisseur’s Collection, an incomparable private collection comprising nearly 300 20th century jewels, magnificent Art Deco vanity cases and fine 18th and 19th century gold boxes, all of which exemplify the enduring appeal sought by today’s connoisseurs. Assembled over four decades with a collector’s eye and a curator’s sensibility, the collection reflects a steadfast commitment to excellence, guided by an in-depth understanding of style, rarity and craftsmanship.

Van Cleef & Arpels
Highlights of the collection include a highly desirable selection of eight mystery-set masterpieces by Van Cleef & Arpels, among the Maison’s most celebrated and technically accomplished creations. Patented in 1933, the mystery-set technique allows gemstones to be mounted without visible prongs, creating uninterrupted fields of colour and showcasing an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. Led by the magnificent ruby and diamond Oiseau Mystérieux brooch (estimate US$600,000-1,000,000), a signature theme of Van Cleef & Arpels since the 1920s, the bird of paradise has inspired some of the Maison’s most celebrated creations. Acquired directly from Van Cleef & Arpels in the early 2000s, the present brooch represents one of the finest and most sophisticated interpretations of the motif. Further highlights include a mystery-set Fuchsia brooch (estimate US$400,000-600,000), a pair of sensational ruby Cadix earrings (estimate US$300,000-500,000), and a ruby mystery-set ring (estimate US$50,000-70,000). The mystery-set selection also includes outstanding sapphire-set examples, illustrating the versatility and artistry of the Maison’s celebrated technique. Together, these jewels demonstrate Van Cleef & Arpels’ exceptional mastery of colour, design and technical innovation.
Exceptional Gemstones
The collection features exceptional diamonds and coloured gemstones, highlighted by a 14.63-carat fancy orange-pink diamond ring by David Morris (estimate US$1,600,000-2,600,000), a pair of breathtaking cushion-shaped emerald and diamond earrings by Graff, each exceeding an astounding 17 carats (estimate US$900,000-1,500,000).
Other examples are the iconic Bulgari Trombino ring mounted with a fine 14.38-carat Burmese ruby (estimate US$700,000-1,200,000), and a pair of oval sapphires weighing 20.60 and 18.99 carats, set as a stunning pair of earrings flanked by diamonds signed Van Cleef & Arpels (Estimate US$600,000-800,000).
Exceptional Art Deco Cases And Gold Boxes
The collectors’ discerning eye for craftsmanship is equally evident in a superb selection of gold boxes and vanity cases. Among the highlights is a remarkable group of highly sought-after Cartier cases, showcasing the Maison’s extraordinary mastery of the decorative arts.
Created from the 1920s onwards, these refined objects draw inspiration from a variety of artistic traditions, from Chinese lacquer work to Japanese decorative arts, all executed with exceptional attention to detail. Ingenious mechanisms, balanced hinges and beautifully conceived interiors further demonstrate the technical sophistication for which Cartier became renowned.
Complementing this group are some exceptional gold boxes, snuff boxes and pill boxes dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Many are enriched with finely carved hardstones, sculpted cameos and elaborate enamelwork, showcasing the artistry of jewellers, goldsmiths and silversmiths at the height of their craft. Adorned with oriental scenes, floral motifs and mythological subjects, these exquisite objects reflect the refinement, technical mastery and artistic achievement.
