CSR Initiatives

D. Navinchandra underlines its commitment to community’s health needs by opening an eye hospital.

Samarpan Eye Hospital – Catering to a population of over 3 million : The Samarpan Eye Hospital is the only specialty eye care hospital in an area of over 100sq. km catering to a population of over 3 million on the border of the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Banaskantha district of Gujarat adjoins the Rann of Kutch, one of the largest salt deserts in the world. The peculiar topography and environmental conditions of the district create a large number of eye problems for people across age groups.

This hospital was earlier operated by the princely state under Nawabsaheb before independent India. It was then taken over by the D. Navinchandra Charitable Trust in 2014, under a new name ‘The Samarpan Eye Hospital’. The Trust completely reconstructed the 30,000sq. ft facility into a state-of-the-art eye care centre. The hospital is equipped to include all eye treatments from diagnosis to surgery, and offers free-of-cost treatment to the economically challenged sections.

The populace of the district is mainly engaged in agro and food processing industries, textiles, minerals and handicrafts. Such occupations by their very nature expose people to extremes of weather conditions in the area.

Samarpan offers eye treatment absolutely free of cost to deserving patients who come here from over a 100km away as this is the only eye hospital in the area.

The hospital maintains a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, paramedical and maintenance staff and some of the most renowned ophthalmologists and surgeons regularly volunteer here.

In its revamped avatar, over 28,000 patients are screened every year on an average, of which over 1,500 patients were operated with Intra Ocular Lens in the cataract surgeries at a subsidized rate. It also treated 117 patients with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and 372 patients were treated for Yag laser treatment.

The directors of D. Navinchandra are on the governing body of the hospital and keep a close eye on its day-to-day work, treatment needs and its reach in the community in a manner which is sustainable and service oriented.
