Diamond Foundry To Build Solar-powered 10M Ct. LGD Unit In Spain

Lab-grown diamond (LGD) producer Diamond Foundry is planning to build its second production unit—its first in Europe — in Spain. The production of single-crystal diamond chips is slated to commence in 2024, with total production ramping up to 10 million carats in this facility, serving both traditional gem-quality diamond buyers as well as the semiconductor industries.

This €740 million project will be one of the first industrial projects in the world entirely powered by solar electricity. Its first foundry in Washington State is 100% hydro-powered at the confluence of the Columbia River and Wenatchee rivers.

Solar energy is abundant in the Extremadura region in Spain, and given our commitment to sustainable production, we are interested in proving that solar can work at industrial scale in a self-contained way, Diamond Foundry stated. “Sustainability and respecting the Earth’s resources are core attributes of our business, and we have focused our growth on sites with 100% renewable power. We are presently also further scaling production in our Washington State foundry and have identified additional sites for expansion in the region as well,” the company said.
