Pearl Jam: In Fashion and Accessories

This article is republished with permission from The Voice of Fashion.

Inspired by Kamala Harris, a selection of pearl studded apparel, accessories and more

Pearls are back, with credit to Kamala Harris, the first female and Person of Colour Vice President of the US. Harris always marks special occasions with a string of pearls, be it a Tahitian black pearl necklace for her swearing-in ceremony into Congress or the elegant design by Puerto Rican jeweller Wilfredo Rosado she donned during Inauguration Day on January 20. The choice is an ode to her college sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha of Howard University in Washington D.C, where pearls are sacred to its foundation story as one of the first African American Greek letter sororities. In solidarity, A viral Facebook group, ‘Wear Pearls on January 20, 2021’ invited everyone to wear pearls as a feminist symbol of empowerment. While pearls have made timeless style statements in the past (who can forget Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Harris has made them au courant and meaningful. Here, a curation of our favourite pearly renditions by homegrown labels and international brands across jewellery, clothing, handbags and more.
