In a gesture of national pride, Surat-based diamantaire and Rajya Sabha MP Govind Dholakia presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a unique natural diamond masterpiece, the “Navbharat Ratna”, on 2nd December 2024. Crafted as the outline of India, this 2.12-carat diamond symbolises the unity, brilliance, and eternal spirit of the nation.
The diamond, shaped and polished by artisans at Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK), took nearly 3,700 minutes to create. Rajeshbhai Kachadiya, with 14 years’ experience at SRK, dedicated 40 hours to shaping the map of India, likening his meticulous work to a soldier’s dedication. Vishalbhai Italiya, a six-year SRK veteran, polished the girdle over 22 hours, adding the finishing touches.
Govind Dholakia, Founder-Chairman Emeritus of SRK, said, “The speciality of the Navbharat Ratna is that the map of India is carved out of a single natural diamond, by laser cutting. The younger generation in my family believe that Prime Minister is a gem of the nation, and so we decided to create and gift him this 2.12-carat gem as a symbol of our appreciation. He represents our nation, so what better than a representation of India for him? One cannot put a price to this diamond, the fact that it symbolises India makes it absolutely priceless. I am very happy that the Prime Minister recognised the skills of my team, as these artisans are the future of India.”
Surat, the diamond hub of the world, processes 90% of global diamonds, showcasing the skill of India’s artisans. This gift reflects the excellence of the region and its commitment to preserving the nation’s heritage through craftsmanship.
